This company was on time and did a great job. They came thirty minutes early, provided paperwork for the job that was done. The best part is the tech let me know that only part of the worked I wanted was actually need, which saved me money!

This company came out within the week. They inspected and cleaned 2 fireplaces. They have to do repair work on one chimney. They seem very thorough and knowledgeable. So far so good, I have no complaints!

This is a tough review to write because I think it's all a matter of perspective. The CSA inspection showed a variety of conditions - which CSA well documented with photos. The conditions DO exist, HOWEVER the questions become 1)Do the conditions truly make the chimney unsafe to operate as CSA says and 2)Do the conditions require the expensive repairs that CSA recommended? A subsequent inspection by a 30+ years of experience mason/chimney builder and Class A Inspector with Boulder County says no to both. So, I believe that CSA DID responsibly find existing conditions and recommended what updated code requires them to recommend HOWEVER it is debatable if those conditions really necessitate the expensive repairs that I would have paid had I not gotten a second opinion. Specifically, CSA recommended $225 to parge (smooth out) the chimney to slow down creosote build-up - there are several benefits to this but without it, it doesn't really make the chimney unsafe to operate. $525 to apply a sealant to the exterior of the bricks to address spall- this is absolutely a project easily done by a homeowner by applying a readily available product by paintbrush. If your chimney is hard to reach it might be worth it, but ours is not. The repair that CSA suggested that really got us researching was the note (with no price noted) of cracked flue tiles. Upon further inquire the quote was pretty much open ended saying it could go into the thousands of $$ depending on how many tiles were affected. Our mason said these were minor cracks that did not concern him in the least. Anyway, this review is not meant to slam CSA. They were actually quite professional and responsive to addressing my questions but in order for me to fully trust a contractor and do business with them I want ALL the information, not just what code says. (NOTE: This house was built 30 years ago - long before some of the code was adopted and it's structure has hosted many safe wood fires with it's current construction) . Consumers should always ask questions, do their research, get second opinions and then do what they feel is best for their safety before jumping into expensive repairs that may not be necessary.
Response from Company:
Thank you for your review and your business. Provided in the inspection report are all the NFPA 211 national standards & International Residency Code reference numbers for every inspection item that was noted down. There are safety reasons for every item that is listed within the NFPA 211 and within the IRC. Unless the mason and the Class A Inspector you received your information from is a NFI Wood Certified Installer or a nationally recognized CSIA Certified Sweep, he does not have the information/education that we do. If there are codes & standards that are not being met, they are potential fire risks for the home. The codes have been in place since the 1950s, so they were in place at the time the home was built. Our job is to provide you the most information and if items are not up to NFPA 211 Standards or up to code, it would be negligence if we did not inform you of the potential fire risks. Noted items from the review/report above: Cracked Flue Tiles: Damaged or deteriorated liners - NFPA211 14.9 states: If the flue liner in the chimney has softened, cracked, or otherwise deteriorated so that it no longer has the continued ability to contain the products of combustion, the liner SHALL be removed and replaced, relined/repaired, with a listed liner system or other approved material that will resist corrosion, softening, or cracking from flue gases at temperatures appropriate to the class of chimney service. Smoke Chambers (Parging): IRC 1001.8 - The inside surface of the smoke chamber shall be parged smooth with a refractory mortar conforming to ASTM C 199. NFPA 211 11.2.1.13: The inner surfaces of the smoke chamber shall be parge coated smooth, with an insulating refractor mortar and not inclined more than 45 degrees from vertical. We are the most certified and educated chimney sweep/repair and installation company in the metro area. We will do whatever we can to assist, but we do have to notate any code and fire safety standard issues that are found upon inspection. Again, we do appreciate your time and your business and hope we're able to assist with any other fireplace needs you may have in the future.
