Write a ReviewOur new roof looks beautiful. The roof work crew removed existing roof and did a great job of cleaning up afterwards. A neighbor had a reroof at the same time by a different contractor and complained about all the old shingle pieces that littered her property -- Stout left us NO mess. We're pleased with our gutters as well, which were installed by a subcontractor. They look good. Punctuality: only minor dings on this point, which really has to do with communication. The large waste bin was delivered one morning, and we were not expecting it, as we hadn't been informed when it would be placed on our property. Luckily we were home and able to move the car that we park in the area needed for the bin. Also we thought the work was completed after the roofing crew left, but when my husband went up on the roof the next day we found a section that hadn't been finished and when we contacted the contractor, found that the crew needed additional material and would be coming back to finish it up. So, as I said, very minor complaints. We had a slight problem with the roof months later and called Stout and he came out that day and fixed the problem immediately. No problems since.Â
Roof looks great. Jake provided bid and completed job quickly. Very knowledgeable and very professional.

There was a five-year warranty on the roof which applied to defects in workmanship only. It has only been six years and I have had numerous issues with leaks around the flashing. - Started calling Jake June 2011 regarding a leak/ water damage on the wall of family room fireplace. He agreed that the flashing was not done properly but did not set up a date to fix it or return my calls - He came over 9/15 and I showed him the pictures that a home inspector took of the flawed flashing work. Jake admitted to the mistakes and said that he would fix it the week of 9/19 - I called them on 9/21 and 9/22 after not showing but they did not return my calls. I called them early on 9/23 and begged them to come back to fix the shoddy work. A day earlier, I had a skylight person come out to re-flash the roof using metal because I was waiting on Stout and did not want further damage - They finally came back out to look at the interior ceiling and walls because it had been going on for so long/ was never done correctly in the first place. The first person they sent out did not fix the problem so by the time someone put in new wallboard and paint it was a year later. The roofing material he used had a limited warranty of 12 years so that was not the issue-- the problem was that they did not do the flashing correctly in the first place. Last week week there was rain coming through the bathroom skylight so I called him in hopes that he would come fix it. Instead, he responded with a verbally abusive message. I then called another roofing company who specializes in roof repairs. They not only fixed the flashing around the skylight but also found 14 other areas that needed to be re-flashed as well. The damage has been done to me but I wouldn't want anyone else to go through this either Update 10/26/15: Â He recognized there were issues with his workmanship and resolved it amicably. I appreciate his willingness to resolve the issues. Â

Get a bid from these guys - they saved us thousands, and did a great job! Our roof is very large, and has several very steep sections.   We knew the brand of roofing tiles we wanted (Certainteed), and got bids from three of Angie's List's "A" roofers, including one that came highly recommended by a friend. Stout's bid was more than $5,000 lower than the other two...for the exact same tiles and installation!! Stout Roofing did a great job, and we feel like we got a really good deal. Jake Stout was very responsive via email, and got me a bid quite promptly. We wanted to see some of the actual roof tiles to decide on a color, and he had one of his men drop off a sample board. The crew showed up on the agreed upon start date, and cleaned up each night. We also got to see how they dealt with something going wrong; some tile bundles slid down one of the steep roof sections, and tore off a section of the gutter. Jake said they would have a gutter company fix it (at their cost), and suggested that we withhold $1,000 from our final payment until it was fixed. As it turned out, however, Stout's crew took a few days longer than planned to finish the roof, and the gutter people got the gutter finished the same day the roof job was done. All in all, we felt like we got a quality roof installation at a VERY good price!
At first it went quite well. As others have commented, Jake did not put on a big sales pitch nor try to convince me to do anything that wasn't necessary. He seemed to be pragmatic about the work and focused on getting the job right. It was this approach that got us to select him to do our job. They wanted to get started right away in order to fit into their timing, and everything went very quickly at first. The roofing team was very professional and appeared to do good work. Their clean-up was OK. They cleaned up most of the debris, although we are still finding nails and asphalt in our yard two months later. The debris appears to be dropping out of our trees. They were pretty rough with our camellia bush, which will take a couple years to recover, and they scuffed up our new deck. Jake replaced one of the worst dinged railings, which helped. Considering all they were doing with our roof, they did pretty well overall with the mess. Our trouble with Stout Roofing was communication. I had to stop the roofing team at one point to tell them about how the job was to be staged in order to fix rotten shingles we had, and I only knew this because Jake had told me the plan. I tried to call Jake to confirm with him but I wasn't able to reach him. His crew was able to reach him and get confirmation on what I was telling them. After the roof was done, his carpenter fixed up all the wood trim and cedar shingles on an hourly rate basis and that is when the poor communication started to really show. It became very difficult to get a hold of Jake to discuss little details and choices. It became a problem when the carpenter did some shoddy work and when we wanted to discuss whether we'd like more shingles replaced than what the carpenter did at first. It was very hard to get a hold of Jake. When I talked to him, he admitted that the work was improperly done, promised to take care of it, and said he would talk to the carpenter about replacing more shingles. However, Jake never got back to me about fixing the shoddy work or the shingles and did not return the subsequent phone calls and emails. To this day, the job is not complete.
Jake Stout was very patient professional throughout the long ordeal, as we had to coordinate with contractors who were replacing part of the roof. He fixed and/or replaced all the little things that could have and did go wrong during the process. I would highly recommend this company
