The piping is located under our utility closet. I shut off our water supply when the incident happened, at a valve located in a ground floor closet. However, cold water, leaking from the ruptured elbow has not stopped. I turned off the hot water heater, and closed the cold-water inlet valve upstream of the expansion tank on the cold water inlet to the hot water heater. This did not stop cold water leaking out of the ruptured elbow. Obviously, the ruptured elbow cannot be removed and replaced without stopping the flow of water out of the ruptured elbow. So far, all of my attempts to stop the leak have failed. I have lived in this house for over seven years and this is the first pipe failure. It appears to me that the high winds we have had recently may have partially dislodged the insulation that covered the piping that failed. Note that that insulation is close to a crawl space vent that may have let the high wind gusts into the crawl space. Note that the crawl space is 'tight'. There are several HVAC ducts that have to be passed in order to get to the site requiring repair which can be slightly nudged aside in order to crawl under them. Right before reaching the site, you will have to crawl over a pipe. The good news is the I have been to the site myself and found no wildlife present. So, the Project Scope includes: 1) Stop water flow to the affected piping 2) Replace the ruptured, 1/2" copper elbow 3) reinforce or replace the current insulation in a way that reliably protects the affected piping from freezing in the future. Finally, I realize that you are probably very busy at this time.
