"Derrick was easy to book, he arrived on time & gave a text prior to his arrival. Very personable and knowledgeable. When the 1st fixture he was to install on a high slanted ceiling wasn't long enough he agreed to come back when we got another fixture. We received a replacement pendant light, he fit us in the day before Thanksgiving and we now have a perfect light fixture. Derrick charged us the original agreed upon amount even though he had to make two trips. We will use his services again."

"They found a problem with the humidistat that was preventing the duct fan from turning on. All I was charged for was the $29 visit fee. The previous contractor that came out said we had a bad fan motor and humidistat (which they kept calling a thermostat - red flag) and quoted us $1500."

"We recently had this company come out and install 240v/50A adapters in our garage for electric vehicle(EV), RV and welder compatibility. I worked with Thomas through the entirety of the project, as he came out and performed the inspection, estimates, and the actual install of the wiring and electrical box updates. Thomas is very familiar with EV electrical work and did an excellent job on all fronts. He was quick to answer or return our calls and his pricing was competitive with the other bids. He clearly explained what was needed to complete the work and his work quality was superb. I learned a lot about electrically retrofitting a garage for these types of application and was appreciative of his sharing of knowledge. We re very pleased with the results and wouldn t hesitate to hire him again on any future home electrical projects."

"I got three estimates, but Elevation Electric was both the most timely to respond and the most cost effective. Once I made a decision, Joe worked quickly to meet my scheduling needs and get the job done. Joe was prompt, friendly and professional, and was able to exceed my expectations with the new electrical outlets he installed in our garage. We will likely hire him back out to install a light fixture and switch in the future. Highly recommended!"

"I really enjoyed the work by these Networking/Ethernet folks. A different provider had quoted me an $800-1000 project and said I needed Cat 6 cabling for ethernet, when really my existing Cat 5E was fine. All it took was ~$100 and one hour for parts and labor and I now have ethernet ports in every room that support Gigabit speed. Thanks again! Couldn't be happier with this."

"Jordan is very knowledgeable about the technology he specializes in. I felt very confident in selecting his company for a difficult project to mount a TV on a brick wall over the fireplace. To further add complexity, there is a gas insert in the fireplace. It took him a little while but he figured it out and TV looks gorgeous with no wires hanging down. I'll be able to enjoy my fireplace while watching TV this winter! He cleaned up throughout the installation and left no mess or trash in my home. My job was a little more costly but worth it for the end result. Highly recommend."

"I cannot express how happy I am with the team at Tipping Hat Plumbing, Heating & Electric. My house had Aluminum wiring in it and I called around looking for a team of people to rewire the entire home in a tight time restraint. Justin came out to do the estimate work and explained all of the options that I had. He was very professional and treated my home as his own. Justin and his team (Kurt, Devin, Zeb & John Jr) worked diligently to ensure the entire project was completed on time. The team treated the house with respect and would ensure that I was satisfied with everything before leaving. Some highlights of the teams performance are below -Covered all furniture with tarps to ensure they would not get dirty -Wore boot covers to protect my floors (wood and carpet) from getting dirty -Vacuumed and swept the areas that they worked -Informed me well in advance to any power outages that I would have during the project time -Worked outside in a blizzard to complete the job before the time limit -Shoveled my walkway when it snowed while I was at work -Gave recommendations on what I could do in the home (Adding outlets for wall mounted tvs, adding lights above the shower that was previously dark, installing ceiling fans) which were all included in the budget. - Took the time to answer any of my electrical questions and they were more then happy to show me what they were doing. Once again, I cannot express how happy I am with the team that worked in my home. I will definitely use them for any future projects I have in my home and would recommend them to anyone looking for work."

"Nate Medford conducted our electrical inspection offered by the Awesome Club Membership Program. Nate didn't just inspect, he explained. He also didn't just explain, he corrected issues along the way. Today he brought our subpanel up to code and prevented a probable electrical fire. In addition, Nate spent lengthy time on the phone with me last week, giving clear guidance on LED fixtures to replace our florescent lighting. With Matthew's help, today the 6 light fixtures were replaced, a necessary wireless carbon detector and GFCI outlet installed, and for fun and convenience, 2 USB outlets given. Special note: the GFCI outlet wasn’t a simple swap-out. Nate had to cut into the trim for that installation, which he did incredibly cleanly and precisely. Upon completion, the work areas were cleared of trash and left in great condition. Thank you so much for all your work, your attention to detail, for caring."

"I went through Home Advisor to replace and install a new attic fan. Jason was the first to call and gave me a quote over the phone. While I was skeptical in the over the phone quote, he asked good qualifying questions about my home and stuck to the price once he arrived. He was on time, courteous and professional. I’ve waited approximately two weeks to write the review to see if there were any issues stemming from the install. There have been none. I would highly recommend Jason and will hire him again for additional work I need done."

Frequently asked questions

  • An electrician’s cost per hour comes in between $50 and $100. It’ll vary depending on your location and the type or professional you hire. Areas with a higher cost of living can expect to pay on the higher end of that scale. Licensing level may also increase the price.
  • Usually you’ll pay a higher rate for the first hour. This covers their travel and time expense. Emergency or after-hours rates are usually higher too – expect to pay an emergency fee of up to $300 plus a higher hourly rate.

Electricians do a fair amount of larger remodeling and new construction projects but also common residential projects including:

For cost information related to the above tasks, visit our Electrical Cost Guide.

  1. Do you have a license to perform electrical work in this state?
All states require an electrical license or work performed under a Master Electrician. You should also ask how many on the job hours of experience they have.
  2. Do you have insurance?
Never use one who isn’t insured. You can ask to see proof of insurance.
  3. Do you have prior work references?
You might skip this for small jobs like installing a light or outlet. For larger projects, always get references.
  4. What are your rates?
Always ask up front. Getting a detailed quote up front is the best way to go.
  5. Who is going to do the actual work?
Often, a Master Electrician will come out to diagnose and bid on projects, but they have their apprentice and journeyman electricians do the work. This isn’t a terrible thing, in fact it’s common practice. The Master’s license is on the line with any work he supervises.
  6. Is your work warrantied or guaranteed?
Any reputable company or contractor warranties their work, usually for at least a year.
  7. Are you usually on time?
Overbooking is a frequent problem with electrical work. Often, a service call goes long, and they end up showing up at your home late. This common complaint is easily remedied with an up-front and honest discussion. If they can’t be on time, make sure they’ll call.

1. Don’t Be Misled by an Electrician’s Hourly Rates

A truly skilled, well-equipped professional with a truck full of parts that charges $100 an hour can be a much wiser choice than an inexperienced hack, working with inadequate tools and no parts, but charging much less. Often, more experienced professionals get the job done quickly with warrantied work.

2. Compare Travel Charges

Rates reflect travel times. Travel charges can have a big impact on your costs and are in some ways easier to compare than hourly rates. Many electricians spend a third or more of their time navigating traffic on their way to a jobsite. Every contractor must find a way to pay for the expense of driving each day.

3. Bundle Repair Jobs Together

When you feel it’s time to call a pro, review your list and then conduct a mini-inspection of your home. Look for faulty switches and dysfunctional or crowded outlets. When the electrician comes, you’ll save money and time by getting everything taken care of at once.

4. How to Prepare & What to Know Before the Electrician Arrives
  • Be as thorough and detailed in describing your needs to your contractor. The more they know, the quicker the job will go.
  • Before they arrive, prepare a precise list of items you want serviced. Electricians have budgeted their time for a service call. They don’t have time for additional requests once they are on site.
  • Make sure the electrical panel box is accessible. You’ll pay for the time it takes to access it.
  • Clear away fragile items, knickknacks and furniture from areas where you expect the them to work.
  • If you have questions about the project, ask them before they start. Most are happy to run you through the problem and the process of fixing it.
  • Ask about potential issues after the work is complete. During a service call a professional will spot any potential hazards.
  • You’ll lose power to parts of your home while they work. Be prepared to pause anything you’re doing during the service call.
  • In most cases you’ll have the option to either pay at the time of service or have a bill sent to you. You’ll be able to pay with cash, credit and sometimes check.
5. Install Money-Saving Electrical Fixtures
  • By switching from ordinary incandescent light fixtures or bulbs to fluorescent or LED ones, you can substantially reduce energy consumption in your home.
  • Motion detector switches can help you save money on outdoor lighting while at the same time providing very cost-effective security to your home.
  • Creative landscape lighting and indoor accent lighting can make your home more appealing to you, your guests and potential buyers in the future.
