    Electrical Work

"Mauricio and crew did a fantastic job! I was having problems with lights flickering and power fluctuating. To remedy that, they added three dedicated circuits for the window AC units and the microwave. They also installed new conduits and replaced my security lights. Mauricio had recommended LED lights on a previous visit, and I am VERY happy with the light output and the fact that they should last for over 10 years! And, Mauricio replaced the electrical panel box. (He'd also recommended replacing it on a previous visit, saying that it was overloaded.) Instead of the jumble of wires I had before, the panel box is big and clean and the breakers are labelled. The only hitch with this job was that CenterPoint failed to show up during their promised window of time to do the temporary power disconnect. Oh, and Mauricio replaced a fan switch on the living room ceiling fan and a light switch on the bedroom ceiling fan. I am VERY happy with the quality of the work they did. In all cases, the work is not only functional, but very neat as well. And I'm pleased with their work ethic. I will be asking Mauricio for extra business cards to share with my friends and neighbors. And S.N.R. will be my "go to" for electrical work in the future, for even the smallest jobs."

"I found IEW Electrical Services via Home Depot Pro Referral Service. Zoe was the first contractor to call me about 5 minutes after I logged the request for an Electrician to help install 7 smart switches in my home. Zoe came across as professional and since he was the first to call, I asked him to do the work. Zoe and one of his associates arrived at the time I asked. They were both very courteous and professional. They went right to work and did not speak with each other outside of coordinating the work. The smart switches were installed without any issues and I was able to successfully program each smart switch within my Ring Alarm System. I would highly recommend IEW Electrical Services. Zoe is professional, courteous, and honest. These traits are very hard to find in this day and age. I will use Zoe and his company for all future related Electrical services."

After discussing what we had planned he made some suggestions we happily followed. We agreed on the estimate so the next day we purchased 6 new fixtures. The day of the repair, Corey and Joni came to the house and introduced us to 2 of their electricians, Dallas and Danny. After about 4 hours, they were done. We couldn't be more satisfied and have them scheduled for more work. Honest, fair and professional is the best description."

They have added additional lighting for several tenants and after we replaced the roof they added the exterior lighting to really brighten up the surroundings of the building for greater security and visibility all with led lights for energy efficiency. Now they are adding power to a new rock pile sign for the strip mall and tenants. Reasonable prices, professional quality, but the reason we keep hiring them is the customer service is top notch."

He did not watch the time as he dug deeper into trouble shooting our cable provide hookup issue, and I could tell he cared deeply about actually identifying and fixing the problem regardless of his investment of time, again without regard for how he would be paid. "Electricity went out late at night and breaker kept tripping, and with three kids at home, we knew we needed help ASAP. We sent in a request to Mark and he called us right away (despite the late hour) to do a phone consultation, and he was here with his team the very next morning. Our entire breaker box had to be replaced which is an expense no one wants to incur, but he gave us an honest price and a great value for the high quality of work that was done. Everything is in working order now, and I am very glad we found his business to come do this repair because the level of service was amazing."

Electric Wiring and Panel Upgrades / Changeouts, Home Surge Protection, Switches / Outlets / Fixtures - Installation and Repair , and 2 more

"About a year ago (March 2017) contracted with Mister Sparky to perform electrical evaluation of my home, as was about to engage in significant upgrading to interior, and initially needed to know how many amps I could use for a new convection cooktop. And, there were a few other issues that had been on my list of things to have done that I wanted to have addressed. The lead electrician, Nina Cleverly (seen her in television ads for this company since then), not only evaluated that need, but did a complete safety evaluation of my 38-year old home. Needless to say, there were many issues that were out of compliance with codes. Nina evaluated all recommended work and presented a proposal. Decided to accept and they got the work all done that very same day! Two electricians came out to perform the work (Sean Simmons and Carnell Lambert), and they did a fabulous job on the large range of items to be addressed, including: whole house surge protector, breaker box replacement and rewiring, replace one ceiling recessed fixture, remove/replace shower light, GFCI outlets wherever needed, fire detection system, install new outdoor motion detection lights, replace one outdoor fixture, new outdoor electrical boxes, etc. They did a fantastic job on all these issues and completed in just one day. I know that my home is in excellent shape with respect to electrical issues. The electricians were all very personable and communicated well. It was a pleasure to do business with this company, and highly recommend them for anyone needing any kind of electrician required work."

"We made the decision to upgrade our electrical service and panel (150A to 200A, new panel, cAFCI breakers). Prior to seeking a contractor, I spent a LOT of time researching the subject, and I knew exactly what the work entailed and approximately how much it should cost. I received three quotes from three different contractors and Power Up was right on the money, while the other two were considerably more (one drastically so). Let me be clear: I am not saying Power Up was some cheap, bargain-basement price. They were FAIR, and what in line with what I was expecting given the extensive research I had done. I had the pleasure of working with Jacob and Chris, the master electrician, on this project. Jacob came out and performed the estimate, I found him knowledgeable, friendly, and willing and able to answer any and all of my questions. We maintained contact during the week or so I sought competing quotes; he showed the right mix of interest in retaining me as a customer without being pushy at all. In other words, he understood that as a consumer it was prudent of me to get multiple quotes, and did not try and pressure me to select them. After I decided to retain Power Up, I was contacted by Chris, the master electrician. Like Jacob, he was friendly and willing and able to answer any of my questions. The project was split across several sessions: the first was the panel install with some but not all of the cAFCI breakers, as we did not have all of the circuits mapped out (standard over-current breakers were temporarily installed in place of the remaining cafes). Chris came out the next day (a Saturday) and patiently spent several hours flipping breakers while my girlfriend and I ran around the house seeing what they turned off. Due to the rainy weather as of late and scheduling, the service upgrade and installation of the remainder of the breakers took another week and a half before we could get it scheduled, but Chris did a great job with very professional workmanship. All in all, I was VERY pleased with the service and work I received from Power Up Electrical Contractors, and would HIGHLY recommend them to ANYONE needing electrical work, big projects, or small projects. The mix of professionalism, knowledge, pride of workmanship, and fair pricing mean that I will be discussing any and all future projects I have with them and recommending them to any friends and neighbors who need anything done. Thank you, Chris and Jacob."

However, after completing another electrical project, which is more his expertise, he returned the next day confident that his research on baluster installation was solid. Needless to say, we are very pleased that we gave him the opportunity to prove his worth. Our new stairway looks awesome, it is functional and very sturdy. We recommend William's."

Frequently asked questions

  • An electrician’s cost per hour comes in between $50 and $100. It’ll vary depending on your location and the type or professional you hire. Areas with a higher cost of living can expect to pay on the higher end of that scale. Licensing level may also increase the price.
  • Usually you’ll pay a higher rate for the first hour. This covers their travel and time expense. Emergency or after-hours rates are usually higher too – expect to pay an emergency fee of up to $300 plus a higher hourly rate.

Electricians do a fair amount of larger remodeling and new construction projects but also common residential projects including:

For cost information related to the above tasks, visit our Electrical Cost Guide.

  1. Do you have a license to perform electrical work in this state?
All states require an electrical license or work performed under a Master Electrician. You should also ask how many on the job hours of experience they have.
  2. Do you have insurance?
Never use one who isn’t insured. You can ask to see proof of insurance.
  3. Do you have prior work references?
You might skip this for small jobs like installing a light or outlet. For larger projects, always get references.
  4. What are your rates?
Always ask up front. Getting a detailed quote up front is the best way to go.
  5. Who is going to do the actual work?
Often, a Master Electrician will come out to diagnose and bid on projects, but they have their apprentice and journeyman electricians do the work. This isn’t a terrible thing, in fact it’s common practice. The Master’s license is on the line with any work he supervises.
  6. Is your work warrantied or guaranteed?
Any reputable company or contractor warranties their work, usually for at least a year.
  7. Are you usually on time?
Overbooking is a frequent problem with electrical work. Often, a service call goes long, and they end up showing up at your home late. This common complaint is easily remedied with an up-front and honest discussion. If they can’t be on time, make sure they’ll call.

1. Don’t Be Misled by an Electrician’s Hourly Rates

A truly skilled, well-equipped professional with a truck full of parts that charges $100 an hour can be a much wiser choice than an inexperienced hack, working with inadequate tools and no parts, but charging much less. Often, more experienced professionals get the job done quickly with warrantied work.

2. Compare Travel Charges

Rates reflect travel times. Travel charges can have a big impact on your costs and are in some ways easier to compare than hourly rates. Many electricians spend a third or more of their time navigating traffic on their way to a jobsite. Every contractor must find a way to pay for the expense of driving each day.

3. Bundle Repair Jobs Together

When you feel it’s time to call a pro, review your list and then conduct a mini-inspection of your home. Look for faulty switches and dysfunctional or crowded outlets. When the electrician comes, you’ll save money and time by getting everything taken care of at once.

4. How to Prepare & What to Know Before the Electrician Arrives
  • Be as thorough and detailed in describing your needs to your contractor. The more they know, the quicker the job will go.
  • Before they arrive, prepare a precise list of items you want serviced. Electricians have budgeted their time for a service call. They don’t have time for additional requests once they are on site.
  • Make sure the electrical panel box is accessible. You’ll pay for the time it takes to access it.
  • Clear away fragile items, knickknacks and furniture from areas where you expect the them to work.
  • If you have questions about the project, ask them before they start. Most are happy to run you through the problem and the process of fixing it.
  • Ask about potential issues after the work is complete. During a service call a professional will spot any potential hazards.
  • You’ll lose power to parts of your home while they work. Be prepared to pause anything you’re doing during the service call.
  • In most cases you’ll have the option to either pay at the time of service or have a bill sent to you. You’ll be able to pay with cash, credit and sometimes check.
5. Install Money-Saving Electrical Fixtures
  • By switching from ordinary incandescent light fixtures or bulbs to fluorescent or LED ones, you can substantially reduce energy consumption in your home.
  • Motion detector switches can help you save money on outdoor lighting while at the same time providing very cost-effective security to your home.
  • Creative landscape lighting and indoor accent lighting can make your home more appealing to you, your guests and potential buyers in the future.
