Feedback on Frank Turner and Touch of Class Masonry (615-981-5466) I got Frank Turner name and phone number from Angi and asked him to perform the annual maintenance and inspection of my 2 gas fireplaces two weeks ago. Both worked fine the past 3 winters, and I had shut off the gas and pilot lights in the spring as I have done in prior years. He came to my house the same day I called in his shiny, new Hummer (hardly a work truck) which should have been a warning to me. He told me he had been doing this type of work for over 40 years, but his business practices seem questionable. For example, he said he did not have a business card and did not provide an invoice documenting the parts installed or services provided. His website is a single page that lists his address as a P.O. Box. While he accepts credit cards, he said he needed to add 5% to the amount charged, significantly higher than any fee he would pay for credit card processing. He asked that my check be written to him personally (instead of his business), a common way contractors avoid reporting their income. After inspecting my fireplaces, he said the controller and pilot assembly were totally clogged on one, and the other was partially clogged but the pilot could be lit. I approved his replacement of the allegedly clogged controller and pilot assembly and paid him $1,250 for the new parts and his services. He took the replaced controller and pilot assembly with him, leaving me wondering whether the parts were defective and really needed replacing. Shortly after he left, the fireplace where he replaced the controller and pilot assembly was making a loud whistling noise with the fire turned off and the pilot light was burning higher than in prior years. When I asked him to come to adjust the new controller to reduce the noise, he reluctantly agreed to do so (after initially saying that the noise was normal, and the setting of the pilot was fine). His return visit took less than 15 minutes to turn down the pilot which eliminated the whistling. Later that week, we were unable to turn on the fireplace because the pilot was out. I tried to re-light the pilot but was unable to do so and called Mr. Turner and asked him to come again to adjust the controller and re-light the pilot. After telling him I had not turned off the pilot (his initial thought), he said it may have blown out with a downdraft through the flue, but he would not return to adjust the new controller he installed and re-light the pilot without charging an additional $300 service call fee. After a long discussion in which he offered a discount on that fee, he said he would not come to correct the setting on the controller he installed unless and until I paid him the additional service call fee, in essence, not standing behind his work. I was left with an inoperable fireplace. I hired another contractor to come to adjust the controller and re-light the pilot. He did so and completed a much more extensive inspection of my flue and chimney (including getting on the roof and taking numerous pictures for the record) and provided a written condition report with his invoice. His fee was considerably less than the one I paid to Mr. Turner. I am not satisfied with the work performed by Mr. Turner and cannot recommend his services.

Response from Company:

I am not going to fall into this man's erroneous accusations. I will just get straight to the point... He does appear to have some emotional and or racial issues. He acted like I was going to run down the street with his fireplace in my pocket... I could hardly work for him breathing down my neck, literally... The whole time of the repair he wanted something done for a lot less than the going price. Every one of my clients down through the years knows of my work integrity, character, and craftsmanship. Upon the diagnostics, I could tell that neither one of the fireplaces had ever been serviced. That is when I explained to him that these units needed to be serviced once a year. He is flipping the advice and instructions I gave him as though he's had them serviced before and that is why he was having me out for the annual service, this is not true. The repair price also was for two fireplaces, one was damaged and not working and he said that he could not get the other one lit. I believe he just tolerated me because he could not find anyone to do the repair at the moment. I also gave him two discounts on these repairs. After two weeks he contacted me and wanted me to do another service call after he himself had been tampering with one of the units. I attempted to work with him and told him I would do the next service call 1/2 price but he wanted me to come out there free of charge.
