Tree Trimming, Demolition, Tree Removal , and 2 more

"Within minutes of posting on Homeadvisor, I was contacted by Peter Telford. He made himself available for a walk through of my tree/brush problem. Honest and straightforward were two of the qualities I noticed within minutes of meeting Peter. I explained my problem(s) and Peter gave me a quote for the the BIG project(which I realized I couldn't afford yet) and then broke the job down into chunks with specific amounts for each. Peter didn't try to sell me on the bigger job- he understood when I said I couldn't afford that much yet. All the trees that needed to come down were within hitting distance of my house , garage or fencing. Peter and his friendly crew took down the hard-to-reach trees carefully, , removed the wood and left me with a cleaned up space. They were in and out in one day. When I'm ready for more tree work- I will be contacting D&P Property Management."

    Electrical Wiring or Panel Upgrade

"Bob called me as soon as I submitted my electrical project on HomeAdviser. After discussing my problem, we made arrangements for him to come to my home the next morning. Bob was very friendly, personable, helpful, efficient, and considerate. He could tell that I was distressed, so he calmly and carefully explained the situation (there was water in my breaker box!!) and immediately found where the water was leaking into my home. He replaced the individual breakers that had the most rust on them and temporarily taped up the outdoor conduit to prevent any more moisture from entering my breaker box. He noticed that my washing machine was not on it's own individual breaker and advised me, for safety reasons, that it should be on it's own individual breaker. Bob provided me with an estimate in terms of the cost to replace my breaker box, the outdoor conduit, and other electrical tasks that needed to be completed, which was very reasonable. We made arrangements for him to come to do the rest of the electrical work. However, before Bob was scheduled to come to my home, I called him with concerns because one of the breakers was still being tripped. He was very polite and to ease my fears, he stated that he would come to my home earlier than we had previously planned to do the work that didn't need the electricity turned off, then he would arrive the following day to complete the majority of the work. He was very flexible and worked around my schedule as well. When Bob and Mike arrived the following day, they went right to work and finished the job within a few hours. They even left my basement cleaner than it was before they arrived!! I consider myself a person of high standards and expect quality work and professionalism. Bob exceeded my expectations. I highly recommend him and now consider him my exclusive 'go to' electrician."

Generator Installation, Troubleshooting and Repairs, New and Old Electrical Work , and 2 more

"I hired Jeff to replace an exhaust fan in my upstairs bathroom. During our preliminary meeting, he provided me with the appropriate measurements to search for a replacement unit. The day the work was scheduled, he was on time.. overall I was very pleased with the results. Before leaving, I told him about a light fixture just outside the bathroom that wasnâ t working. He was able to identify the problem which turned out to be a defective switch. He had the part and was able to repair the light fixture for a small fee. He was very professional with the work he performed."

But my installer, Ivan, was up to the task, even though it took longer than usual. The final project turned out great, and I can hardly wait for the power to go out so I can experience having the lights stay on without having to go out to the garage and hook up my portable generator."

Swimming Pool - Opening & Closing Service, Swimming Pool Service, Above Ground Swimming Pool or Accessories - Repair or Service , and 1 more

"We just bought a house in Niskayuna, NY during the sensitive time of CoVid 19. Long story short I have hired a pool company prior to contacting Aaron. The first company basically took my money and never followed through the job which was opening and maintaining a pool that was closed for over a year. They installed the ladder backwards and overcharged me for a filter and never cleaned or vacuumed it as they were supposed to. Weeks went by our pool stayed green and never cleared up. Aaron got a call from me and within an hour he showed up on my door step made an inspection of the pool before telling me what needed to be done in order to get it to a safe level to even swim in before the season is over. He used chemicals and literally stayed in touch with me over the course of 3 days. I sent him photos via text and he Communicated very well with me regarding next steps. My pool finally is open after 2 long months of me being jerked around by a well know company. Aaron is reliable and very honest. He charged a 1/3 of what the other company did. On the other hand I also found out he does other jobs too...like junk removal and is a handy man! Further more Aaron is very well connected to the contractor world and is HONEST! I even booked our pool closing and already looking at other jobs he can help me with in the house! Trust me when I tell you he has been terrific to work with and answers all questions and even answers his phone. Book him for all your home improvement needs ASAP! Tell him Jah referred you!"

Frequently asked questions

  • An electrician’s cost per hour comes in between $50 and $100. It’ll vary depending on your location and the type or professional you hire. Areas with a higher cost of living can expect to pay on the higher end of that scale. Licensing level may also increase the price.
  • Usually you’ll pay a higher rate for the first hour. This covers their travel and time expense. Emergency or after-hours rates are usually higher too – expect to pay an emergency fee of up to $300 plus a higher hourly rate.

Electricians do a fair amount of larger remodeling and new construction projects but also common residential projects including:

For cost information related to the above tasks, visit our Electrical Cost Guide.

  1. Do you have a license to perform electrical work in this state?
All states require an electrical license or work performed under a Master Electrician. You should also ask how many on the job hours of experience they have.
  2. Do you have insurance?
Never use one who isn’t insured. You can ask to see proof of insurance.
  3. Do you have prior work references?
You might skip this for small jobs like installing a light or outlet. For larger projects, always get references.
  4. What are your rates?
Always ask up front. Getting a detailed quote up front is the best way to go.
  5. Who is going to do the actual work?
Often, a Master Electrician will come out to diagnose and bid on projects, but they have their apprentice and journeyman electricians do the work. This isn’t a terrible thing, in fact it’s common practice. The Master’s license is on the line with any work he supervises.
  6. Is your work warrantied or guaranteed?
Any reputable company or contractor warranties their work, usually for at least a year.
  7. Are you usually on time?
Overbooking is a frequent problem with electrical work. Often, a service call goes long, and they end up showing up at your home late. This common complaint is easily remedied with an up-front and honest discussion. If they can’t be on time, make sure they’ll call.

1. Don’t Be Misled by an Electrician’s Hourly Rates

A truly skilled, well-equipped professional with a truck full of parts that charges $100 an hour can be a much wiser choice than an inexperienced hack, working with inadequate tools and no parts, but charging much less. Often, more experienced professionals get the job done quickly with warrantied work.

2. Compare Travel Charges

Rates reflect travel times. Travel charges can have a big impact on your costs and are in some ways easier to compare than hourly rates. Many electricians spend a third or more of their time navigating traffic on their way to a jobsite. Every contractor must find a way to pay for the expense of driving each day.

3. Bundle Repair Jobs Together

When you feel it’s time to call a pro, review your list and then conduct a mini-inspection of your home. Look for faulty switches and dysfunctional or crowded outlets. When the electrician comes, you’ll save money and time by getting everything taken care of at once.

4. How to Prepare & What to Know Before the Electrician Arrives
  • Be as thorough and detailed in describing your needs to your contractor. The more they know, the quicker the job will go.
  • Before they arrive, prepare a precise list of items you want serviced. Electricians have budgeted their time for a service call. They don’t have time for additional requests once they are on site.
  • Make sure the electrical panel box is accessible. You’ll pay for the time it takes to access it.
  • Clear away fragile items, knickknacks and furniture from areas where you expect the them to work.
  • If you have questions about the project, ask them before they start. Most are happy to run you through the problem and the process of fixing it.
  • Ask about potential issues after the work is complete. During a service call a professional will spot any potential hazards.
  • You’ll lose power to parts of your home while they work. Be prepared to pause anything you’re doing during the service call.
  • In most cases you’ll have the option to either pay at the time of service or have a bill sent to you. You’ll be able to pay with cash, credit and sometimes check.
5. Install Money-Saving Electrical Fixtures
  • By switching from ordinary incandescent light fixtures or bulbs to fluorescent or LED ones, you can substantially reduce energy consumption in your home.
  • Motion detector switches can help you save money on outdoor lighting while at the same time providing very cost-effective security to your home.
  • Creative landscape lighting and indoor accent lighting can make your home more appealing to you, your guests and potential buyers in the future.
