How We Got Started

I chose to work in this industry because I (Andy) wanted to provide quality pest control solutions for homes in Southern California. MORE ABOUT THE OWNER: A passion for football, family, service, and entrepreneurship fueled owner Andy's decision to establish his own pest control business. Andy's commitment to service began at the young age of 8, when he started his own egg route. He continued his strong work ethic playing football throughout high school and went on to play for Stanford University on scholarship. Post-graduation, Andy headed back to Southern California to start his own pest and termite control company (Bug Squad and POW! Exterminating, Inc.) with his high school sweetheart, Nancy. Having been in the business for almost 40 years, Andy is one of the most experienced exterminators available. 40 years have also allowed Andy to develop Bug Squad and POW! to be the reliable and hard-working company it is today. Although he's been off the football field, it's apparent Andy's the MVP when it comes to pest control!.

I was offered the role of Office Admin via typo-laced text message; Only to have my offer renegged after desperately trying to get a response to my inquiry "What will my hourly Pay rate be and may I please have details in writing?" 1 voicemail, 1 voice note, 2 text messages, and 2 voicemails later, I was FINALLY informed... by the daughter, that they had chosen to "go in a different direction" after I failed to accept the owner's verbal phone offer..... A phone conversation that NEVER happened. To be rejected is rough. To have an offer reneged, rougher. T o have purposely turned down ANOTHER job offer for this one, insulting. To be ignored, humilating. To be gaslight, infuriating. To be dismissed, unacceptable. Bug Squad Pow operates on a level of sketchy business dealings, papyrus files, dinosaur antiquities, and wink-wink/handshake agreements and deals. Show yourself the respect they refused me and DODGE THIS BULLET at all costs.

We're committed to maintaining a network of trusted home service businesses, and those who don't meet our criteria will be rejected or promptly removed from our network.

Criminal Background Check

Who does HomeAdvisor background check?

The owner or principal of each business in HomeAdvisor's network (with the exception of Corporate Accounts) must pass a background check. Unfortunately, we cannot perform a background check on every employee of a business—the background checks are performed only on the owner or principal. As always, we recommend that you conduct your own research on the businesses you hire, including making inquiries directly with the businesses regarding their employee background check policies.

What does the background check cover?

We use a third-party vendor to conduct a criminal records search in the county in which the business owner or principal works. Our third-party vendor uses a national criminal database ("NCD") to screen service professionals. Business owners or principals with felony arrests that carry a pending decision or who are convicted of felonies in the past 7 years ago will not be admitted to the network. Businesses or owners convicted misdemeanors or felonies, or who have dismissed charges or arrests on their records involving rape/incest, sex offenses, or lewd and lascivious behavior at any point in time will not be admitted to our network.

Our background check does not exclude service professionals unless the crime at issue is a felony.

*The comprehensiveness of the NCD varies by state. Please be aware that the reporting in the NCD is particularly limited in the following states: AL, CO, DE, GA, ID, IL, KS, LA, ME, MA, MI, MS, MT, NE, NV, NH, NM, SD, UT, VA, VT, and WY. After initial admission to the HomeAdvisor network, businesses are re-screened if a concern is reported to HomeAdvisor.

Corporate Accounts

Some businesses are employees, franchisees, dealers or independent contractors ("Corporate SP's") of larger national or "Corporate Accounts". When this is the case, we may match you with the Corporate Account or with one of their Corporate businesses. The above screening process does not apply to Corporate Accounts, as HomeAdvisor does not screen Corporate Accounts or Corporate businesses.

Verify Trade License HomeAdvisor checks to see if the business carries the appropriate state-level license. Verify Insurance As a part of our screening process, we encourage professionals to carry general liability insurance. We require coverage for hundreds of services. Verification of State Business Filings For business types that require a Secretary of State filing, we confirm that the business is in good standing in the state in which it is located. Criminal Records Search HomeAdvisor uses 3rd party data sources to conduct a criminal search for any relevant criminal activity associated with the owner/principal of the business. Sex Offender Search We confirm that the owner/principal is not listed on the official state Sex Offender web site in the state in which the owner/principal of the company is located. Bankruptcy Search We use 3rd party data sources to check the history of the principal/owner of the business for bankruptcy filings by or against them. Legal Search for Civil Judgments We use 3rd party data sources to check the principal/owner of the business for state level civil legal judgments entered against them. Liens Search We use 3rd party data sources to check the principal/owner of the business for liens placed against them. Identity Verification (SSN) HomeAdvisor verifies the social security number(s) of the owner/principal for identity check purposes. This check applies primarily to smaller business entities. Identity Verification (Reverse Phone Lookup) We conduct a reverse business phone lookup to identify records matching the phone number information provided by the business.
