Write a ReviewWe Hired Jim to work on several jobs as our residence (1) Building Custom Shelving for basement storage where he constructed onsite durable shelving out of 3/4 in. Plywood well secured with pocket screws and perfectly level/plumb resulting in a durable and cost effective storage solution which he adjoined to the floor Joist overhead adding strategic strength and rigidity to the storage solution. (2) Replacement of tri-windows; Jim removed our cheaply installed builder grade vinyl tri-windows with independently framed in and secured Andersen replacement 400 series windows. In addition to the installation on the interior, Jim utilized Azek trim on the exterior (3) Custom Floor Cabinet w. Built in storage Cabinets – underneath the tri-window Jim replaced for us, he constructed a custom fitted an onsite built three drawer and doored floor cabinet that doubles as a bench. All the intricate details were deployed by Jim to keep my wife happy including durable hinges that can easily withstand the pressures of young children and slow close drawer slides (cabinet hardware). The drawers were inset so that he was able to build wainscot doors to cover them up (4) Shower replacement – Jim replaced our builder grade three piece direct to stud shower enclosure. He demo’d the entire thing neatly and then installed it with a beautiful custom shower tile we picked out full with etched glass sliding doors and sufficient shelving to keep the wife happy.
I hired him to fix a fence, install an outside rail, paint a bathroom ceiling and replace a toilet. Every time he completed a task the work was sloppy and when I asked him to correct it he would get mad. For instance, he replaced my fence an used the old rotten posts so he had to re-do it. Next, he painted the bathroom and the coat was uneven and he ended up re-painting it. Lastly, when he installed the toilet he didn't caulk it. My wife asked him to do it and he said "I'm not here for that". He has a bad attitude and he does not cleanup after he works the job. I will not use him again.
This review needs a quick and honest response as it contradicts my reputation for professionalism and the quality work I've established for over 35 years in the community. All one needs to do is to look at my previous reviews on Home Advisor, all in the five (5) star range, speak with neighbors or to my extensive list of customers to know of my work ethic. This review is plainly inaccurate, and I will briefly rebut with particulars to prove this. First, it is written as if this customer awarded me all the jobs at once. That was not the case. I did replace the fence post as noted, with quality wood from my ongoing supplier who takes pride in his products as do I in using them. We are both offended by implying in the review that it was a rotten post. After completing the job, the owner paid me without any complaints. Several weeks later, he called me for another job. (Why call me if he didn't like my work?) In this case, he asked me to replace an outside handrail and post and to paint both these and the railings on the porch. Again, the job was approved and I was paid with no complaints. A few weeks went by and he called once more and asked that I paint a bathroom. I completed the job. There was a concern by his wife that one area looked unpainted. I made a point of addressing her concern immediately and stopped by to show her, by demonstrating with my hand, that that she was seeing a shadow. This same costumer called a fourth time to install a toilet and caulk the base. Again, he was satisfied with no complaints. I am not sure why this customer called me four times and never complained and then wrote up this negative review. It may possibly be because I did not return a fifth call he made while I was experiencing unexpected health problems which temporarily limited my work and ability to respond to inquiries. Since, I have tried in vain to contact him. He will not answer my calls, nor does he answer calls from Home Advisor. Anyone in business knows the frustration and disappointment of inaccurate comments made without foundation or even the ability to address them. I am proud of the reputation my many costumers have given me over these years and want to clarify this inaccurate review for everyone's benefit.
He understood what was needed for our various projects.
James Lavin is a dedicated craftsman. He is prompt, courteous and professional. I hired him in the summer of 2017 to do some minor repair work to our deck and his work was so good that I called him in January 2018 to work on my garage project, which included removal of drywall, installation of insulation and rehanging drywall, and enclosing the well pump and motor. James' work was flawless. I will be employing his services again in the very near future since I have a couple painting projects for him to take care of. I wholeheartedly recommend James Lavin for any home improvements that one may be contemplating.
Jim could do all the different jobs I needed done . From repairing fences to building porch railings to ordering stone and filling in my driveway holes . Plus much more . He was prompt, knowledgeable and professional . I will definitely use him again and recommend him to my friends .
