Carpet remains the most popular residential flooring out there and the only true soft flooring material on the market. Of course, it's also one of the more difficult floors to maintain. Particularly, carpet is poor at withstanding the stress of water and mud tracked in from the outside. Thus, the vast majority of homes have some areas of home carpeting and other areas of hard surface flooring. No matter where carpet is being installed in your home, making the right decisions about your new carpet and its installation are imperative to getting a quality, cost-effective carpet installation.
Some of these decisions are pure common sense. If you have a new puppy that isn't 100 percent house-broken, you probably don't want to spend an extra thousand dollars for a higher quality carpet that will still be ruined in a few years. On the other hand, in general, trying to skimp on your carpet installation tends to be a costly mistake in the long run.
Options
Besides different quality standards among manufacturers, you'll need to make some basic choices about your carpet installation, most notably fibers and pads. Natural carpet fibers such as wool tend to shed, but they will also retain their color and be easier to clean. Synthetic fibers vary in their imitation of these high-quality natural fibers. Most, however, will last longer than natural fibers, despite their degrading appearance. Because synthetic fibers don't shed, they also retain the grime that clings to carpet fibers. This means more frequent carpet cleaning.
You'll also need a carpet pad to protect the integrity and lifespan of your carpet. Basic carpet pads will help keep your carpet fibers together. Higher-end carpet pads will also make your carpet feel softer and more forgiving. Some carpet companies will tell you the thicker the carpet pad, the better. The truth is, the density of a carpet pad is a much better indicator of the overall quality of the pad.
Cost of Installation
The general cost of some home improvement projects are not so frequently advertised as carpet installation. Between the TV and the radio, it's difficult to not have some intuitive sense of how much different types of carpet might cost. Between the cost of carpet and installation, the average price tag for Seattle homeowners who install carpet in their home is $1,700 across the board of comprehensive home installation and small, single room projects. Just to let you know, HomeAdvisor has a database full of contractors and companies willing to take on both small and large carpet installation projects; we've recently seen projects come in as low as $300 and as high as $12,000 with high customer satisfaction marks for both homeowners.
Contractors
Whatever your carpeting needs are, you'll want to get the most bang for your buck, a quality installation for a reasonable price. Despite what you may see and hear, this rarely involves gimmicky ads. In fact, rather than seeking out carpeting companies, you should begin by talking to a local Seattle carpet installation contractor, who will have a breadth of knowledge and experience with every carpet manufacturer, fiber, and pad out there.
Of course, even carpet installation contractors can range widely in quality. That's why you'll want to make sure to get multiple estimates from different contractors. HomeAdvisor's rigorous ten-step screening process will insulate you from overt scams, but you'll want to use our customer ratings and reviews section to choose the best contractor for your home.
These sentiments have been echoed by our feedback from homeowners. Here's what we've heard from Seattle homeowners who have recently had carpet installed in their homes by HomeAdvisor contractors:
"Get several bids before you buy. Quality and price vary a lot. Don't be fooled by any TV ads."
"Make sure you shop around for a carpet installer because there seem to be a lot out there that want to rip you off. Stay away from the really large companies."
