"After trying to find someone to hire for my project and having contractors either not even arrive for the initial meeting to see the job, or not even submit a promised bid, TOA arrived on schedule, their bid was fair, and they were always on-time, communicative, professional and very pleasant. I love their work and would gladly recommend or hire them again."

"Sergio and the team at Portland I Remodeling Corp. were extremely responsive, and rolled with the changes we requested along the way. The work they did (flooring, installation of new sinks, and painting) was extremely well done. I appreciate their honest and fair pricing, respect for our COVID concerns, excellent customer service and outstanding hands-on work."

"Jason responded quickly to come to our home and discuss building a retaining wall on a sloped dirt area which also required removal of 2 trees. He offered great suggestions while he was there and provided a competitive verbal estimate on the spot. He then supported his verbal estimate with a written quote within a few hours. Jason arrived with his crew the following week to begin the project. The weather caused many delays over the next several weeks but they made progress whenever they could. Jason was very good at keeping me informed with text messages. The completed project is perfect for what I told Jason I needed. He and his crew did an excellent job and I won’t hesitate to recommend J&K for any type of similar construction projects."

"NW Builders & Renovation inc and Eric, the project manager, did a great job explaining all the roofing materials and steps to us. They were able to pull in the installation date and complete all the roofing work in four days, just before the big rain arrived."

The hills surrounding the city mean many homeowners have a moderately to severely sloping lawn. It's a real bear to mow week in, week out during the summer. And you don't get to enjoy or use your yard for common residential purposes, whether it's sophisticated dinner parties or croquet with the kids. Fortunately, Portland retaining walls can solve this problem. Your yard can be leveled and a retaining wall will hold back the resulting mass of topsoil.
Landscaping and Retaining Walls
If you decide it's time to install a retaining wall, you should probably consider the benefits of comprehensive landscaping design. Portland retaining walls are often installed as part of a larger landscaping project. These walls can be great in conjunction with wrought iron fencing as a beautiful and secure perimeter for your property. For a relaxing atmosphere, ponds and waterfalls can be constructed around your retaining wall for a breathtaking effect. If you prefer substance, use your wall to frame a new backyard patio or garden. Or, take a look at the jackpot with a heated residential pool.
Types of Walls
Traditional Masonry: The original retaining wall uses stone and mortar to produce a strong, beautiful wall that is unmatched for residential retaining walls. Since they require the highly-skilled services of a masonry contractor, these walls are also the most expensive.
Poured Concrete: These walls are created by, as the name indicates, pouring concrete into a mold. This produces a "seamless" wall that is strong and less expensive than traditional masonry, but lacks the classic look of a stone wall.
Dry Stone: You guessed it. These walls are created by simply stacking stones. So long as you can pick them up and reasonably fit them together, you can build these walls yourself. Dry stone retaining walls, however, are mostly for decorative purposes, as they don't prevent soil erosion as professional retaining walls will.
Cost of Retaining Walls
As you can imagine, the cost of your retaining wall depends almost exclusively on the size and type of your wall. Our data shows that while the average cost of a retaining wall in Portland is about $5,000, smaller retaining walls may cost as little $1,000 and bigger projects can easily exceed the $10,000 mark. By considering the size of the wall and whether your retaining wall is decorative or functional by nature, you can begin to guess where estimates may fall, but the only way to truly know how much your project will cost is to talk to specific contractors.
Contractors
HomeAdvisor puts every single contractor in our database through a rigorous ten-step screening process that guarantees basic standards of reliability and professional credentials. Our online, quality-controlled customer ratings and reviews section will enable you to see what other homeowners have thought about individual contractors. These reviews also give contractors a powerful incentive to meet and exceed your expectations. Still, there's a good chance you'll presented with a number of different estimates from quality contractors, in which you get what you paid for, and you'll need to decide just how luxurious and involved you want your retaining wall installation to be. To this, you must make up your own mind, but you can trust that HomeAdvisor is working for you to ensure that whichever way you go, you can trust that you're making a quality hiring decision.
