"About a month ago, at the end of May, I was in a bit of a panic. I had to move. As to why. Canâ t. Just: I had to move. And I think it may have been through Angieâ s List that I found Silver Star Movers & Storage, Inc. For $100 for the first three hours, they would send two guys in a big truck to come to grab what I needed, put it gently (I hoped) in the truck, move me and my things less than five miles, and deposit me (gently, I hoped) at my new digs. Jay called about forty-five minutes in advance of his scheduled arrival time, introduced himself as the guy with Silver Star Movers, and said that he would be arriving right smack in the middle of what had been the agreed-upon window of time. â Is that about right for you?â he asked. I took his question to mean that, if I needed more time to pack or less time because I wanted out in a hurry, he was flexible. His offering flexibility sounded like an act of kindness, civility, something I needed. â Thatâ ll be perfect,â I said. But I didnâ t need the time. â Well, then, thatâ s when my friend, Legacy, here, and I will be arriving. See you then.â Jay and Legacy. I spent the last 30 years of my professional life as a professor of English, teaching composition at the University of California and as a tenured faculty member at a California community college, and I have met a lot of young men in that time, most all of whom wanted to leave me with a favorable impression, but these two guys were standouts. They had been vaccinated against Covid19, yet they wore masks. They were educated, identifying the provenance of some of the African art my wife has on the walls as well as the impressionist painter who inspired my wifeâ s Matisse-like â Waveâ on our side-garage door and recognizing the book cover of a first edition on my bookshelf. Legacy taught me something about the gaming platform Twitch, an enterprise one of my four sons has embarked on. These were just flat-out, good guys, the kind a father wants his sons to become. They were efficient, respectful of the items they carried, not to mention of my wife and of me â so funny, so friendly. And there was a final incident, probably born of all the subterranean emotions coursing and churning unsaid, but as Jay was getting my signature, the four of us â my wife, Legacy, Jay, and I â were standing at my back door, and I was to remain at my house to finish a few things, and the other three were off to the new place. And when I looked at Jay and Legend, it struck me, â So, I wonâ t see you guys again.â Jay laughed and said, â Ah, man, câ mon. Youâ re going to make me cry here!â They did not know how close I was. I canâ t say enough about Jay and Legacy â such extraordinarily good men."
