How We Got Started

I chose to work in this industry because I’ve been working within the Real Estate Industry for over 20 years. This said times are continuing to change with almost daily advancements within the inspection industry. I continue to enjoy updating my services and systems used to help bring about more pertinent information to homeowners - irrespective of whether they are brand new 1st time home buyers or have owned 10 different homes in their lifetime. My goal remains the same of providing in-depth reports to help them supplement their knowledge about what will be one of the largest purchases they will make in their life. .

What is the base price?

The base price is based upon industry standards and typically starts at around $400 for an average 1500 sq ft home (Prices may increase as needed due to inflationary increases in fuel / other charges as needed). Price then increases by $50 for each 500 sq. ft. over this amount. So, if the home is 1500-2000 sq. ft. then this increases the amount by $50. If the home is 2000-2500 sq. ft. - then the price would increase by $100. This includes inspecting both the exterior as well as the interior. Crawlspace inspections are extra and typically add an additional $150 - up to 3500 sq ft. Sometimes larger homes may add additional challenges to inspecting this specific area and in some cases where multiple areas, water, toxic mold or venomous animals are present, this may prevent inspection until these issues are resolved.

Matt showed up 10 minutes early to the appointment. He was very well equipped to deliver a thorough and educational inspection as well. I'm a first time home buyer and have to say that I am blissfully unaware of a lot of things that I should be on the lookout for. Criminal Background Check

Who does HomeAdvisor background check?

The owner or principal of each business in HomeAdvisor's network (with the exception of Corporate Accounts) must pass a background check. Unfortunately, we cannot perform a background check on every employee of a business—the background checks are performed only on the owner or principal. As always, we recommend that you conduct your own research on the businesses you hire, including making inquiries directly with the businesses regarding their employee background check policies.

What does the background check cover?

We use a third-party vendor to conduct a criminal records search in the county in which the business owner or principal works. Our third-party vendor uses a national criminal database ("NCD") to screen service professionals. Business owners or principals with felony arrests that carry a pending decision or who are convicted of felonies in the past 7 years ago will not be admitted to the network. Businesses or owners convicted misdemeanors or felonies, or who have dismissed charges or arrests on their records involving rape/incest, sex offenses, or lewd and lascivious behavior at any point in time will not be admitted to our network.

Our background check does not exclude service professionals unless the crime at issue is a felony.

*The comprehensiveness of the NCD varies by state. Please be aware that the reporting in the NCD is particularly limited in the following states: AL, CO, DE, GA, ID, IL, KS, LA, ME, MA, MI, MS, MT, NE, NV, NH, NM, SD, UT, VA, VT, and WY. After initial admission to the HomeAdvisor network, businesses are re-screened if a concern is reported to HomeAdvisor.

Corporate Accounts

Some businesses are employees, franchisees, dealers or independent contractors ("Corporate SP's") of larger national or "Corporate Accounts". When this is the case, we may match you with the Corporate Account or with one of their Corporate businesses. The above screening process does not apply to Corporate Accounts, as HomeAdvisor does not screen Corporate Accounts or Corporate businesses.

Verify Trade License HomeAdvisor checks to see if the business carries the appropriate state-level license. Verify Insurance As a part of our screening process, we encourage professionals to carry general liability insurance. We require coverage for hundreds of services. Verification of State Business Filings For business types that require a Secretary of State filing, we confirm that the business is in good standing in the state in which it is located. Criminal Records Search HomeAdvisor uses 3rd party data sources to conduct a criminal search for any relevant criminal activity associated with the owner/principal of the business. Sex Offender Search We confirm that the owner/principal is not listed on the official state Sex Offender web site in the state in which the owner/principal of the company is located. Bankruptcy Search We use 3rd party data sources to check the history of the principal/owner of the business for bankruptcy filings by or against them. Legal Search for Civil Judgments We use 3rd party data sources to check the principal/owner of the business for state level civil legal judgments entered against them. Liens Search We use 3rd party data sources to check the principal/owner of the business for liens placed against them. Identity Verification (SSN) HomeAdvisor verifies the social security number(s) of the owner/principal for identity check purposes. This check applies primarily to smaller business entities. Identity Verification (Reverse Phone Lookup) We conduct a reverse business phone lookup to identify records matching the phone number information provided by the business.
