Matrix Basement Finishing Southwest Michigan

We are extremely happy with our finished basement. Matrix did a great job start to finish using open communication, fair price and solid workers to make our vision come true!

Worked with Roland Colonna, Senior Design Consultant. I was a full-time farmer and have a lot of experience with building. We recently purchased a new condo and need the lower walkout level finished. I have worked with and know a lot of builders, including our latest one and am very happy with and appreciate the expertise and honesty of Roland. There are a lot of builders who do not know the building requirements and have the knowledge of the materials used for projects like this so I was very surprised with his expertise. Also, just as important was the no-pressure sales, fully disclosed cost analysis of each and every product and project, and explanations of the various types of trim, flooring, doors, etc. (with pictures). I don't want to seem like I am embellishing here but if you want your basement done, definitely contact this company.

We had our basement finished by Matrix in 2022 and even hosted an open house for our neighbors to view the space?something Matrix encouraged in order to help market their work and gain referrals. We were happy to recommend them and did just that when our neighbor and friend across the street decided to finish their basement. They recently signed a contract with Matrix specifically because of our recommendation. Unfortunately, we were told that we?re not eligible for a referral bonus because our neighbor didn?t call ?our? sales rep?who, by the way, no longer even works for the company. That feels like a very convenient technicality to deny us the referral that we clearly generated. Matrix was quick to take advantage of our generosity when it benefited them, but now that we?re asking to be treated fairly as former clients, they?ve turned away from that spirit of partnership. That?s disappointing, especially considering the premium we paid?far above what a traditional contractor charges

Overall Matrix did a great job. It took a little longer than expected but the workmanship was very good. There were issues but Matrix is very good at working to solve any problems fairly. Dan, our project manager, did a great job of following up quickly. They were easily the best construction company we?ve worked with and we?ve worked with quite a few.

We had Steve Phillips from Matrix Basement out to our home this evening. Steve was very polite and professional. Took the time to view our basement space, gave good insight and suggestions of what layout options would work best. Along, with drawing out the layout for us to visually see. Steve answered all of our questions. We look forward to working with Matrix Basements and having our basement space finished for our family to enjoy.

Our journey with Matrix to finish our basement started positively but faced several challenges. Initially, Steve, the sales representative, provided a thorough explanation, instilling confidence in our decision. However, after signing the contract, communication lapses and mismanagement became evident. Peter, who discussed the final layout, pressured us to use Matrix's painters, leading to confusion about wall priming and mudding. Ben, the site manager, was rarely present, and we had to follow up constantly with both him and Jackie, the project manager. The lack of oversight from Matrix meant we had to monitor the project ourselves. Despite the impressive final result, the overall experience was disappointing. We recommend hiring independent subcontractors for better project management. Lastly, when the project is completed, they will offer you a credit to write them a 5 star review. We obviously didn?t sell out.

Matrix did a great job up front with the planning and drawings. Their subcontractors did not always understand the scope of work and we (the home owner) really had to stay on top of the contractors day to day to make sure the project was getting executed right. One of the contractors plugged their equipment into our sump pump outlet and did not plug it back in and we got some flooding. Recommend to put signs up at sump pumps to not allow anyone to plug into those outlets. In the end Matrix made sure all of the issues were taken care of and done right, but the project could have been done much sooner if things were done right the first time.

Parts of the work was done very well. But they ordered too little wood flooring and the project was paused for 5 weeks to order more. I have just discovered that the plumbing for the bathroom that was installed bypassed my water softener. So now there are stains on the walls and the drain. The PM on this job was lackluster at best. There was finish work that was never finished and I just wanted them out so I finished it. I should have hired a different contractor.

We hired matrix because we had a huge basement that was not finished. I researched many companies and got several quotes, and we ultimately went with Matrix. I can say from start to finish, the experience was awesome.
