Paul is the most honest person I've met using Home Advisor. My call was answered promptly on a Sunday morning. He explained thoroughly what the possibilities could be and the cost and he did not try to see me something I did not need. He repaired my garage door opener --- just needed some adjustments. He was done in less than 30 minutes. Fantastic! I'd highly recommend him.

I contacted HomeAdvisor to get estimates for installing two new garage door openers as well as fix issues I was having with excessive noise coming from my garage doors during opening and closing. Paul of First Call Garage Doors made contact within a few minutes of submitting my request. Came and did an inspection of the entire project to include diagnosing the problem with the garage doors. Upon completion of the inspection I was provided an itemized estimate of the work to be done. I felt the estimate was very reasonable for the work to be done. On the day of service, Paul and his co-worker showed up and completed the work within the time period I was told it would take to complete. I'm very happy with the work they did and would definitely recommend First Call Garage Doors.d

We perform this screening when a business applies to join our network and, if the business is accepted, whenever concerns are brought to our attention. We're committed to maintaining a network of trusted home service businesses, and those who don't meet our criteria will be rejected or promptly removed from our network.

Criminal Background Check

Who does HomeAdvisor background check?

The owner or principal of each business in HomeAdvisor's network (with the exception of Corporate Accounts) must pass a background check. Unfortunately, we cannot perform a background check on every employee of a business—the background checks are performed only on the owner or principal. As always, we recommend that you conduct your own research on the businesses you hire, including making inquiries directly with the businesses regarding their employee background check policies.

What does the background check cover?

We use a third-party vendor to conduct a criminal records search in the county in which the business owner or principal works. Our third-party vendor uses a national criminal database ("NCD") to screen service professionals. Business owners or principals with felony arrests that carry a pending decision or who are convicted of felonies in the past 7 years ago will not be admitted to the network. Businesses or owners convicted misdemeanors or felonies, or who have dismissed charges or arrests on their records involving rape/incest, sex offenses, or lewd and lascivious behavior at any point in time will not be admitted to our network.

Our background check does not exclude service professionals unless the crime at issue is a felony.

*The comprehensiveness of the NCD varies by state. Please be aware that the reporting in the NCD is particularly limited in the following states: AL, CO, DE, GA, ID, IL, KS, LA, ME, MA, MI, MS, MT, NE, NV, NH, NM, SD, UT, VA, VT, and WY. After initial admission to the HomeAdvisor network, businesses are re-screened if a concern is reported to HomeAdvisor.

Corporate Accounts

Some businesses are employees, franchisees, dealers or independent contractors ("Corporate SP's") of larger national or "Corporate Accounts". When this is the case, we may match you with the Corporate Account or with one of their Corporate businesses. The above screening process does not apply to Corporate Accounts, as HomeAdvisor does not screen Corporate Accounts or Corporate businesses.

Verify Trade License HomeAdvisor checks to see if the business carries the appropriate state-level license. Verify Insurance As a part of our screening process, we encourage professionals to carry general liability insurance. We require coverage for hundreds of services. Verification of State Business Filings For business types that require a Secretary of State filing, we confirm that the business is in good standing in the state in which it is located. Criminal Records Search HomeAdvisor uses 3rd party data sources to conduct a criminal search for any relevant criminal activity associated with the owner/principal of the business. Sex Offender Search We confirm that the owner/principal is not listed on the official state Sex Offender web site in the state in which the owner/principal of the company is located. Bankruptcy Search We use 3rd party data sources to check the history of the principal/owner of the business for bankruptcy filings by or against them. Legal Search for Civil Judgments We use 3rd party data sources to check the principal/owner of the business for state level civil legal judgments entered against them. Liens Search We use 3rd party data sources to check the principal/owner of the business for liens placed against them. Identity Verification (SSN) HomeAdvisor verifies the social security number(s) of the owner/principal for identity check purposes. This check applies primarily to smaller business entities. Identity Verification (Reverse Phone Lookup) We conduct a reverse business phone lookup to identify records matching the phone number information provided by the business.
