"Intial job was having the Dryer vented from the basement. He then took out my bathtub and replace it with a whole new tub/shower and backing. He also worked on a few light fixtures, pipe leaks, and electrical outlets and issues. I am glad to know he is familiar with multiple home improvement projects because I plan to use him for all future upgrades and repairs. I am extremely happy with his work and the pride he takes in making sure we we’re getting best work."

    Outdoor decretive ponds, Electrical

"Glenn and his team were super awesome and professional throughout the process of installing 4 fans and 6 recess lights. They were punctual and respectful of my home... Cleaned up at the end of everyday. Price was below what others were charging for the same job and quality of work was beyond my expectations. I have no hesitation in recommending them to other electrical and wiring projects. Thank you Glen."

Electrical for New Builds/Additions, Networking/Wiring, Panel Upgrades , and 1 more

"Both my adult son and I recently hired Kevin for electrical work: ceiling fan installations; upgrading can lights to digital lights in the kitchen; installing new ceiling light fixtures; and switch upgrades to dimmers. Several of these tasks were more challenging than simple switch-outs, requiring innovative solutions to make the products we purchased fully useable in our residences. Kevin is just superb to work with--on time; fair and reasonable pricing; pleasant and professional--if I could give more than 5 stars I would!"

"We just want to say thank you for the beyond amazing service that we received from office staff and even more the gentleman that installed our new water softener system with reverse osmosis, uv light and a tankless hot water heater . Mike and Forest where amazing, knowledgeable and kind. Mike helped move some things around in the basement because I didnâ t have it done in time. They are a great team and work really well with each other. We had made them sweet Italian sausage for lunch. We noticed a water leak after they left l. Mike was so amazing and drove from Albany to fix it for us on his way home for the night. I had some chili cooking and gave him some. Mike even cleaned the water of the basement floor. Way more above and beyond than he needed too. Truly amazing. My family would like to say that Mike and Forest are a rare kind of people who just care and will go above and beyond for the people they help to have a better quality of life. We had moved in to take care of our nanny and her water system was no longer working and a week before the install the hot water heater went after 30 years. We recently updated appliances and we needed to protect our investment from the hard water. We absolutely love the reverse osmosis and are drinking the water so much we run out of drinking water lol. We will eventually upgrade to a dual holding tank for drinking water. For now we can make due with what we have. We were spending about $150 sometimes more in water a month for cooking and drinking purposes now we will see the savings in roughly 6 years just for not buying water anymore. With the tankless hot water heater it is too soon to see the savings yet we have a propane system living in the country and we are trying to reduce electric consumption. Gas is cheaper than electric for the usage we have we estimate that we will save around $80 additionally per month with the tankless hot water system. With that added into the equation we estimate about 4.5 years and we will have our return on our initial investment. Our next project will be a generator from this company. We lose electricity a few times a year and with nannyâ s health itâ s not acceptable in todayâ s society. Again thank you Mike and Forest the office ladyâ s weâ re very helpful on this process with us as well."

"Haller removed an old ac system and replaced it with a heat pump. The work included installing an additional return in the family room (split level home) to return air from the lowest point in the house. The crew was knowledgable, their work was neat, and they cleaned up at the end of the day. The work was completed in 2 days and the new Carrier system works great so far. Looking forward to see how it performs next fall and winter."

"I had a microwave high voltage transformer fail and parts were not longer available. The microwave was on a range hood fan circuit which also powered a lighting circuit. Instead of the 250 watt fan it replaced under a previous owner, the microwave pulled 1700-1900 watts The circuit also had lighting loads and a bathroom fan. The circuit load caused excessive voltage drop during every use (bathroom fan slowed down). Depending upon what was turned on the circuit breaker tripped, usually during family gatherings, about 5 times per year. The microwave was covered by my home repair warranty and a new microwave circuit from the panelboard had to be paid for separately. Keeler Electric had a good price for the new microwave circuit (I got about 5 bids) and I found out that Keeler could also do the installation of the microwave under the home warranty. Since the new microwave circuit needed to have a new circuit breaker installed, I took the opportunity to have some modifications to the panelboard done - relocation of a GFCI receptacle and extension of a plug-in transformer power cord that drove my cable television splitter box . Finally, the existing microwave receptacle was hidden IN THE WALL behind the cabinet above the microwave. The new circuit has the receptacle in the back wall of the cabinet for easy replacement of the microwave when needed in the distant future. The craftsman worked most of the day and completed all the work in a very professional manner -- all in one trip. If I had to use different contractors for the different work components multiple trips would have been needed. I am a retired Air Force facility engineering officer and I have done design and construction management in 4 countries outside the United States after I left military service. I monitored all work performed and I would definitely ask Keeler Electric for a quote on any future electrical work I may need."

"We were trying to find a new phone system that would combine two different locations. After contacting several vendors, and deciphering the best application for our needs, we happened on DESA. The pricing was the best and well within our budget. The most important part of using DESA was the support we received. They are extremely informative and guided us through the entire process. They are still available for changes and questions. We are very happy with the decision to work with this company."

Frequently asked questions

  • An electrician’s cost per hour comes in between $50 and $100. It’ll vary depending on your location and the type or professional you hire. Areas with a higher cost of living can expect to pay on the higher end of that scale. Licensing level may also increase the price.
  • Usually you’ll pay a higher rate for the first hour. This covers their travel and time expense. Emergency or after-hours rates are usually higher too – expect to pay an emergency fee of up to $300 plus a higher hourly rate.

Electricians do a fair amount of larger remodeling and new construction projects but also common residential projects including:

For cost information related to the above tasks, visit our Electrical Cost Guide.

  1. Do you have a license to perform electrical work in this state?
All states require an electrical license or work performed under a Master Electrician. You should also ask how many on the job hours of experience they have.
  2. Do you have insurance?
Never use one who isn’t insured. You can ask to see proof of insurance.
  3. Do you have prior work references?
You might skip this for small jobs like installing a light or outlet. For larger projects, always get references.
  4. What are your rates?
Always ask up front. Getting a detailed quote up front is the best way to go.
  5. Who is going to do the actual work?
Often, a Master Electrician will come out to diagnose and bid on projects, but they have their apprentice and journeyman electricians do the work. This isn’t a terrible thing, in fact it’s common practice. The Master’s license is on the line with any work he supervises.
  6. Is your work warrantied or guaranteed?
Any reputable company or contractor warranties their work, usually for at least a year.
  7. Are you usually on time?
Overbooking is a frequent problem with electrical work. Often, a service call goes long, and they end up showing up at your home late. This common complaint is easily remedied with an up-front and honest discussion. If they can’t be on time, make sure they’ll call.

1. Don’t Be Misled by an Electrician’s Hourly Rates

A truly skilled, well-equipped professional with a truck full of parts that charges $100 an hour can be a much wiser choice than an inexperienced hack, working with inadequate tools and no parts, but charging much less. Often, more experienced professionals get the job done quickly with warrantied work.

2. Compare Travel Charges

Rates reflect travel times. Travel charges can have a big impact on your costs and are in some ways easier to compare than hourly rates. Many electricians spend a third or more of their time navigating traffic on their way to a jobsite. Every contractor must find a way to pay for the expense of driving each day.

3. Bundle Repair Jobs Together

When you feel it’s time to call a pro, review your list and then conduct a mini-inspection of your home. Look for faulty switches and dysfunctional or crowded outlets. When the electrician comes, you’ll save money and time by getting everything taken care of at once.

4. How to Prepare & What to Know Before the Electrician Arrives
  • Be as thorough and detailed in describing your needs to your contractor. The more they know, the quicker the job will go.
  • Before they arrive, prepare a precise list of items you want serviced. Electricians have budgeted their time for a service call. They don’t have time for additional requests once they are on site.
  • Make sure the electrical panel box is accessible. You’ll pay for the time it takes to access it.
  • Clear away fragile items, knickknacks and furniture from areas where you expect the them to work.
  • If you have questions about the project, ask them before they start. Most are happy to run you through the problem and the process of fixing it.
  • Ask about potential issues after the work is complete. During a service call a professional will spot any potential hazards.
  • You’ll lose power to parts of your home while they work. Be prepared to pause anything you’re doing during the service call.
  • In most cases you’ll have the option to either pay at the time of service or have a bill sent to you. You’ll be able to pay with cash, credit and sometimes check.
5. Install Money-Saving Electrical Fixtures
  • By switching from ordinary incandescent light fixtures or bulbs to fluorescent or LED ones, you can substantially reduce energy consumption in your home.
  • Motion detector switches can help you save money on outdoor lighting while at the same time providing very cost-effective security to your home.
  • Creative landscape lighting and indoor accent lighting can make your home more appealing to you, your guests and potential buyers in the future.
