I hired Hugo and his team through a recommendation of a friend that had screened over 3 contractors to remove textured ceilings to achieve a smooth ceiling. Hugo reassured me that his wife that works with him was a drywall expert and the team knew what they were doing. On day 1 or 2 of the project, I informed Hugo that I was concerned that this wife didn't know what she was doing. I had always witnessed textured ceilings being fully dampened and scraped cleaned. His team was lightly dampening and barely scraping all texture off. Hugo came onsite to reassure that the technique was correct and would be done correctly to my satisfaction he asked that I allow them to finish. As the project drew to a close I took upwards of 2 hours to quality check the work. I was up and down a ladder with a flashlight designating all flaws with blue tape lumps, bumps, small holes in the drywall and visible lines of the textured ceiling. Hugo confirmed that he knew it was a problem and would have his wife and team fix everything. I reminded Hugo that I had already pushed the movers out a week to ensure there was no interference in the work being done, that I needed it down right with no delays. Hugo was still working hours before I was scheduled to move in and kept pressing he wanted to be paid that day although I had already paid a deposit (that was disclosed) and partial payment the day before Christmas (that wasn't disclosed but he said he needed to pay the workers something before Christmas. I also had painted was done which I have no complaint about). I paid Hugo the final payment approximately 1-2 days after moving in. Note: Because I had just moved in (which is a lot of work) I hadn't had an opportunity to reinspect what I had already brought to Hugo's attention plus I believed he followed through because I walked through the house to discuss what needed to be done there-there was blue tape. Once I realized all issues weren't resolved, I informed Hugo I even sent photos as evidence. Instead of standing behind his work and the word he sent me an email stating it would cost more for his team to repair what I had already advised him of (and he was responsible for quality checking, not me). I replied expressing just how disappointed I was. Fast forward about 1 week later when it stopped raining and the sun came through my windows and shined on my ceiling I realized it worse than I ever imagined. My ceilings look like an amateur did the work I could have done a better job. Drywall lumps, streaks, signs of the old textured ceiling (not a smooth ceiling as promised) - it simply is not quality and professional work. I reached out to another drywall contractor to inspect and he confirmed that the job was done very poorly. I reached out to Hugo to express my concerns (sent more photos) and asked that he repair or refund me to have done properly.
