"Hyzri was prompt, professional and responsive. We had an old concrete retaining wall and stairs that were crumbling and an eyesore. He quickly demolished the old wall and rebuilt the new wall and stairs, completely transforming my rear alley entrance. I would definitely recommend Desire Masonry."

"Poor communication between scheduling and workers and billing. Requested an after 10am appt., guy showed up at 8AM while we were asleep. Billing department tried to charge twice what was quoted in email. They did honor the quote however. Work was done well and they tried hard to go for the easiest and least expensive solution to solve the problem."

Installing a deck is one of the most enjoyable additions a homeowner can make to his or her property. When the weather gets warm in Washington DC, deck installation is one project few residents end up regretting. Whether wood or composite, open or shaded, once you install a deck, you've got a perfect place to enjoy warm summer days and cool summer nights with friends and family. If you're considering deck installation in Washington DC, however, there are several factors to consider to make sure your investment is as durable and attractive as possible!
Hiring a Deck Builder
One of the most integral parts of any deck is the person who builds it. In Washington DC, deck builders are far from hard to find, but choosing the company that's right for the job is not always an easy task. The contractor you hire should be easy to talk to, easy to get in touch with, and know what they are doing. No matter what a company's portfolio looks like (and any company you choose to do this work should be able to supply you with pictures of what they've done in the past!), if they are difficult to contact or hard you find communication to be lacking, there's a good chance something will go not exactly as planned. It is a good sign when a contractor is not only eager to please and quick to get back to you, but happy to give you the information of previous homeowners who have been happy with the work they've had done!
Options
Not every deck is built from the same type of wood (and some aren't made of wood at all)! When you install a deck in Washington DC, it is very important that you use a material that is not only going to handle high temperatures in the summer, but can hold up during cold and wet weather, as well. Almost any deck material can last for 10 or 15 years if it is maintained, but if you want your investment to last for decades, it is essential that you discuss with your contractor the various options available for your deck. Plastic and composite lumber are growing in popularity, as are tropical hardwoods like IPE that are uncommonly resistant to Mother Nature, but these are far from the only materials on the market that can go the distance, so choose your wood wisely!
Additions and Extras
Before you build a deck, Washington DC homeowners should take the time to consider the many features that decks can easily accommodate. Hot tubs, awnings, and outdoor kitchens are all possibilities, but if you wait until your deck is finished to consider them, the upgrade to accommodate them will generally be more expensive than it would have been to include them from the beginning!
Prices
Of course, the price of a deck can vary dramatically depending on its size, complexity, and the material used to create it. HomeAdvisor processes thousands of deck additions every year, and we've seen Washington DC deck installations for as little as $4,000 or $5,000 and for as much as $20,000 or $30,000! The choice is up to you whether to go high end or standard, but one thing's for sure: different companies often charge different prices for the same work. To get the best deal, make sure to contact at least 3 deck building companies and get quotes from each!
