"After getting quotes and meeting 3 other contractors, we easily made the decision to hire JK Custom Building & Remodeling to finish our large basement. From the very start John was able to offer suggestions and was very knowledgeable regarding every aspect of construction. From the first stud that went up to every detail along the way, John and his crew were excellent craftsmen. We really liked the fact that John was hands on and kept us updated several times a week as to what and when to expect the various phases of the construction. His skill and workmanship is superior. My family and I have stated throughout that we were so lucky and fortunate to have selected him and his company. He used only the best, high quality materials and gave us great suggestions. Our basement looks absolutely amazing! Janet & Phil L. Cream Ridge, NJ"

"We built a sun room on the back of our older beach house. Charlie met with us, was extremely patient and knowledgable, took a significant amount of time to explain the job and gave us a very reasonable estimate. He also handled the entire permitting process. The job was completed on time in spite of the supply chain problems and the cost estimate was met. Our sun room is great and we are very satisfied. His worker Kenny and Robb worked extremely hard in sometimes excessive heat and did beautiful work, all to perfection. Ken also fixed a leak on our deck that no other company was able to do. I would recommend Chamber Home Design without any reservation or hesitation."

Depending on the type of project, you may find subtle differences in the hiring process. Here’s a look at task-specific advice.
You can use HomeAdvisor to help evaluate a contractor’s qualifications. We put pros through a screening process, and award badges to high-performing contractors. You can find these badges on a pro’s HomeAdvisor profile, and sometimes, his or her website.
Your research doesn’t stop here. Once you’ve found a few prospective companies, make an call to ask a few questions about work history, licensure and more:
In most cases, the responses you get to these three questions will give you a very good idea of the right pro for your project. If you have more than one front-runner, these additional questions can help you narrow it down.
Any good contractor will answer these questions, and most will appreciate dealing with a client that takes such an active interest in finding good service. On the other hand, if a contractor gives you a hard time with these questions, you probably want to find someone else.
