"We recently moved into a remodeled home and the seller did not have a line hooked up for the fridge water/ice maker. Nick was prompt in his communication and came by the house the same day we contacted him. After looking at the water line and cabinets, he knew exactly what needed to be done and was able to complete the job correctly with the simplest solution and was efficient. He was respectful of my home and time and was very professional. I anticipate many more projects around the house and hope to use Nick."

Austin Garage Remodeling

Garage remodels aren't the most popular home remodeling project but they're often the wisest. With a little tweaking, your garage can be used for almost anything. If you don't absolutely need the space to house your car, you should consider looking into some form of garage remodel to enhance your Austin home and lifestyle.

Big and Small
Not all garage remodels are the same. This sounds obvious, but it's important to understand when setting a budget, talking to contractors, and making a final decision who you will hire. Whereas a small kitchen or bathroom remodel usually involves giving surfaces a face lift to improve their aesthetic appeal, small garage remodels often involve increasing storage. Adding storage cabinets or shelves can increase storage and/or organize your storage and remove the space's cluttered feel.

Renovations
Garage renovations in Austin are a popular home improvement project for one simple reason: Austin is a musician's Mecca. Many homeowners will soundproof their garage to create practice space for their band. Whether you like to jam with your friends or have children who display blossoming musical talent, soundproofing your garage is often the only way to create artistic license without driving other household members and neighbors absolutely bonkers.

Other large Austin garage renovation projects may include insulation and floor resurfacing to transform your dingy garage into living space. Such transformations are done for such ideas as a home gym, laundry room, game room, or a home office or work area.

An Easy Home Addition
Another great idea for Austin garage remodeling is to add a loft or small living space above your garage. This often involves alterations to your garage roof, but it does eliminate the need to hire an architect to create a floor plan. In this manner, you can install a home addition for $10,000-$20,000 instead of $40,000 or more. The space can be used for virtually anything from creating an artist's studio to having a place to keep those irritating in-laws. It often pays for itself by increasing your home's value, and avoids the all-too-common awkward look of an attached room to a pre-existing home floor plan.

Costs
The overall average for a garage remodel is $10,500. If all you need to do is organize your garage and make some low-key storage cabinets, you can probably get in and out for as little as $1,000-$2,000. For a complete overhaul that transforms your garage into the living standards of the rest of your home, you can be looking at as much as $20,000-$30,000. We even had one homeowner spend $35,000 on a garage remodel.

Project Length
The good news is that the average Austin garage remodel takes only two weeks, where a kitchen remodel is more likely to take 4-6 weeks to complete. It may be worth it to show a little patience, especially since having your garage out of commission probably won't wreak havoc on your life. Talk to your contractor in detail about what you want and brainstorm different ideas. A little extra planning can often make the difference that will ensure your project goes off without a hitch.

Comment: I'm looking to connect my detached garage to my house in Central Austin. The garage is roughly 30 feet behind and slightly offset to the house. Ideally the project would involve converting the existing 1.5 car garage (~420 sqft) along with the enclosing/connecting the space between the existing structures (~450 sqft) to create a master suite, office, and dining room. The garage does have electricity but no plumbing. There are no large trees in the area but a stone patio partially covers (~20%) of the area that would be enclosed. The house was built in 1950 and I believe the garage was built in the 90s. The house is occupied by a tenant until mid-February so we would look to begin work as close as possible to that time.

Comment: I am looking to expand my existing garage into a barndominium home. All of the electrical and insulation is complete along with some pre-existing HVAC work. There may be some need to rewire some electrical in the center as I would like to divide the area up into two spaces. A living room area and a bedroom for my daughter. For the center area, I would like the 16x10 rolling garage door replaced with French doors and additional windows, may require additional framing to install the doors/windows. For the floors I would like large tiles throughout and the bedroom carpeted. The walls and rooms will need to be framed and drywall applied. Please let me know any other questions.
