Comment: I have 3 walls that need to be assessed for load-bearing in my residential home.
My home is 2 stories with a Michigan basement. It was built in 1900. Some of the home is lath and plaster construction, with some being drywall. It is a long, thin house with joists and rafters spanning the shorter side.
1. I would like to create a small storage area (43H x 34W) under the stairs on the first story. The wall is lath and plaster and is parallel to the joists. The wall does not continue on the second floor.
2. The second wall is on the second story and is parallel to the joists. I want to remove a small portion of this to create a hallway.
3. The third wall is on the second story and is perpendicular to the joists. It doesn’t appear to be directly above another wall from the measuring we are doing. There is a wall under it but it appears to be offset. It does not span the entire length (just the back of one room). This is the only wall we want fully removed. I have personal drawings of our design but nothing professionally designed or engineered.
We have access to the first floor joists via both crawl space and Michigan basement, an attic above the second story and limited attic access around the perimeter of the second story (like unfinished second floor area)
