"Let me count the ways. First, from the get-go, Matt was the on-site manager and craftsman. No sales manager who comes in once and you never see him again. No general contractor who disappears until it's time to pay. Second, Matt does much of the work himself (especially the carpentry and painting). Third, he has a stable of trusted subcontractors (plumber, electrician, drywall installer) whom he works with. Fourth, if he needs to make any revisions from the initial agreement, he goes over them with the homeowner before any work is done. Fifth, if the homeowner sees a problem that needs fixing, Matt's eternal reply is "no problem." If I had to say anything that was remotely negative, it would simply be that there were delays in the start and finish dates, which I attribute to the fact that Matt is widely sought after and runs the business by himself. In retrospect, the delays we had were more than offset by the outstanding workmanship that we enjoy every day in our new kitchen."

"We couldn't be more pleased with the work done by Paul and his team. Their craftsmanship is superb and they were a pleasure to work with. Paul takes great pride in his work and it shows from a clean demo to the finished product. Our kitchen is beautiful thanks to Paul at Old Country Construction and we can't wait to enjoy it for many years hosting family and friends."

Depending on the type of project, you may find subtle differences in the hiring process. Here’s a look at task-specific advice.
You can use HomeAdvisor to help evaluate a contractor’s qualifications. We put pros through a screening process, and award badges to high-performing contractors. You can find these badges on a pro’s HomeAdvisor profile, and sometimes, his or her website.
Your research doesn’t stop here. Once you’ve found a few prospective companies, make an call to ask a few questions about work history, licensure and more:
In most cases, the responses you get to these three questions will give you a very good idea of the right pro for your project. If you have more than one front-runner, these additional questions can help you narrow it down.
Any good contractor will answer these questions, and most will appreciate dealing with a client that takes such an active interest in finding good service. On the other hand, if a contractor gives you a hard time with these questions, you probably want to find someone else.
