"Mike and his crew, Tommy, Jeff and Brandon, have done deck updating, and 3 bathroom redos besides the kitchen redo. The house I purchased was dated 1948, that we started to call the Fun House, due to the strange things that were done to it over the years. Mike and his guys never batted an eye figuring out how to fix and make better. And they always discussed with me and explained what they wanted to do. I would definitely recommend them for any job you need to be done. Mike is honest enough to tell you if it can be done, and he always does the work as if it were his own house. And he is more than fair on this pricing."

"Hector painted the wrought iron railings on our front and back porches and also our shed. The quality of his work was remarkable. I had researched the best paint to use for this application and had my mind made up. When I asked Hector what he would recommend, he came up with the exact same paint. First, he prepped the railings with a power drill with wire brush attachment to remove rust and chipping paint - one day for two railings. Then he applied an excellent primer to both railings - one day. Lastly, he applied the finishing coat in one day and also completed power washing our shed and repainting it entirely (10'x12' shed). He is a true pro! No paint droppings, no paint on anything except where it was supposed to be applied. He is very careful and covers and tapes around everything. His price is extremely reasonable (esp for the quality of his work) and I would highly recommend him!I am VERY particular about our home and he is the only painter that I will use in the future!!!"

"So happy that I accepted A to Z's bid to renovate the interior of an older home that had been rented out for 12+ years. Some walls needed replacing, floor and sub-floor needed to be replaced, trim needed fixing, drywall need repairing and paneling replaced. Some paneling and drywall needed replacement on entire walls and ceilings needed repair and painting as well. Hamado's team were punctual every day and worked through the weekends to meet deadline, even as more things were discovered. They had to work around plumber and plumbing issues and were very professional, nice to work with and did an amazing job. The house looks new! I will use them again as I find new projects or any additional repairs to the property."

"Mr. Carey from the moment he stopped by for the appraisal I knew had been doing painting for a while and was a professional. He is very knowledgeable, personable, and professional. We walked the house as my wife and I explained that we wanted our whole exterior (hardy plank), trim, and shutters painted. We welcomed his professional opinion on the few questions we had. We had 3 other painters appraise our exterior paint job and we picked his company over them. He was able to write a informal appraisal in a matter of a few minutes where it took the other 3 a couple of days. His price was fair and his estimate was spot on and did not change when we received the formal quote. Once we let him know we were using his company he had the house washed the very next day and the hose was completely painted three days later even though he did not start the day after the house was cleaned. His workers are easy to talk to and Mr. Cary checked up on them and asked us about how we liked what was going on as the job progressed. He goes above and beyond your expectations. I would highly recommend him to others knowing the value of the quality work he does and the charismatic professionalism that he brings to the job."

"Fernando and Nick did an amazing job totally reinvigorating our extensive, 20-plus-year-old backyard fence. Their power-washing alone made it look nearly new! Before buying our stain color in bulk, they were willing - on short notice - to purchase small amts of 2 colors and paint each on the fence so we could make the best choice. And when several worn boards needed replacing and we realized we needed new hardware on the fence gates, they didn't miss a beat and made time to complete those tasks. Their pricing was excellent and their courteous, service-focused manner was refreshing. We promptly recommended them to a neighbor and began thinking of more jobs they could complete for us."

"I almost don’t want to write this review because I selfishly want to keep this painter all to myself! But credit where credit is due — this crew is simply incredible. They showed up with a full team of nine (yes, NINE) people and got to work like a well-oiled machine. Every wall, ceiling, trim — painted to absolute perfection. Not a drip, smudge, or missed spot anywhere. And as soon as they finished, they cleaned up so thoroughly you’d never know painters had even been in the house — except now everything looks flawless. Even better, the price was more than fair, especially for the speed, professionalism, and quality of work. So, yes, I highly recommend them… but also, no, please don’t call them because I need them available the next time I have a project!"

"It is with deep satisfaction that I recommend Gradys Painting and Plastering & Construction. Mr. George Grady is a skilled craftsman. He was hired to correct long neglected and extensive masonry and window issues on a large, beautiful Presbyterian Church built in the Civil War era in Philadelphia. The property was neglected with only minimal maintenance performed over the last 40+ years. The building was in severe decline and in need of stabilization and restoration on many fronts. Cracked ledge plates were chipped out and reestablished, internal walls damaged by leakage were broken out and repaired, brickwork was repointed and in severe cases reestablished to original strength and beauty. Leaks around the base of the building were addressed to stabilize deterioration of the foundation. Large rotted window sills under beautiful stained glass windows were restored after significant masonry reestablishment due to water damage under the rotted out sills. Broken and missing stained glass windows are in the process of repair and replacement. The process started with new metal frames cast by Mr. Grady. The new frames will hold clear painted replications of the original stained glass, also crafted by Mr. Grady. Regular windows all around the church and manse were also repaired and restored. Roof leaks were accurately identified and repaired. A sagging plaster ceiling has been torn out and restored. All this work was done by Mr. Grady alone or with an occasional helper. He worked with care, expertise and respect for the original structure. The results far exceeded our expectations and have injected new life into a building on the brink. This building, owned by the Presbytery of Philadelphia, now houses a new urban ministry in a newly gentrifying area of the city. We are happy to have had the good fortune to be connected to Gradys Painting and Plastering & Construction by Service Magic."

Frequently asked questions

Painters usually price a job by the square feet of the project. Sometimes they’ll include flat fees for fixed expenses, like overhead and permits.

We make finding a painter easy. Simple use our directory to find a painter. Here you can browse local pros, check their reviews and do your first screening without ever having to call. We’ve also prescreened all the pros for you, to give you peace of mind.

Interior painting makes for a doable DIY project. You can save some money and get a real sense of accomplishment by doing this yourself. And, with the right prep work – covering, taping and scraping – it’s fairly forgiving. But it takes a lot of time to move furniture, tape trim, prep the surface and cover your floor, let alone apply the actual paint. Instead, save yourself the time and hassle and find a local interior painter.

Leave exterior painting to the pros. Not only do you need to worry about the type and quality of the paint, you’ll also likely need a ladder and considerably more prep work. You’ll likely need additional equipment like ladders, scaffolding and possibly a paint sprayer. It’s almost cheaper to just hire a pro. Talk to a local exterior house painter about your project.

  1. Do your research. Understand what to expect and what to look for in a pro. Look at paint types, prices and costs.
    1. Interior home painting costs $1,000-$2,800
    2. Exterior painting costs $1,700-$4,100
    3. Painting a ceiling costs $150-$350
    4. Painting cabinets costs $350-$1,200
    5. Trim painting costs $500-$1,500
    6. Calculate paint coverage
  2. Call pros for site inspections and estimates. Always get three to five estimates.
  3. Check references, compare quotes, look at past work. After you have estimates in hand, do one final pass to compare the contractors.
  4. Sign a contract with the pro of your choice. You might need to make a down payment, usually 25% to 50% of the total project cost to cover material costs, but not all pros require this. Don’t pay for the entire project upfront.

  • A complete inspection. Each pro takes a walk around your home to evaluate the condition of your current paint, the size of the job and any obstacles for accessing the site. They do this to see how much prep work they’ll need and estimate how long the job will take. The more thorough the inspection, the more accurate the quote.
  • Color consultation. Expect each contractor to have varying color options and suggestions. However, you have the final say.
  • Listen to the pro – they’re experts after all – but don’t get pushed into a color combination or finish type that you don’t want. Understand the different exterior paints or interior paint choices before your pro arrives.
  • A rough estimate or complete quote. Finishing contractors vary here. Usually, they can quote straightforward projects on the spot. But some may need to take it back to their shop to run numbers and give you a detailed estimate with costs broken out. Neither method is better than the other, but just make sure to get multiple quotes.

  1. How long have you been in business? A long business history helps you avoid shoddy companies. It’s hard for a service business to stay in business if they don’t do good work.
  2. Are you licensed and insured? Not all states require a license for painting homes, but many do. Always use one that’s insured.
  3. Do you belong to any professional organizations? You’ll find many online, like the Painting Contractors Association or the Finishing Contractors Association?
  4. Do you have other work I can look at? Always check a portfolio or, in the case of painters, it’s better to look at work they did a few years ago to see how well it’s held up.
  5. How long will the job take? Get a rough estimate but get it in writing.
  6. How many people are in your crew? This is especially important if you work remotely. More people generally means more noise, but they’ll be done faster.
  7. Will I be in the way if I’m home during the painting? You usually won’t be in the way, but this question helps you understand what to expect while they’re working. They’ll need to lay down coverings and do a lot of prep work.
  8. Do you guarantee your work? Never hire a painter who doesn’t guarantee their work. This often means they’ll rush the prep work, since peeling never happens right away.
  9. What type of paint do you use, and how long is it rated to last? Different rooms need different paint and the exterior needs exterior paint. It comes in different grades with different guaranteed lifetimes.
  10. Can you supply a written estimate and contract? Never use a painter who isn’t willing to put his work in writing.
