"My wife and I were completely amazed by the quality of work, communication and price of A-1's work. Price: I had several people quote the job. The prices ranged from a little under A-1's price to nearly double. The high price was ridiculous, and the person couldnâ t explain why. My house is 20 years old, and every wall needed TLC. Jim, from A-1, understood that half the project was getting the walls and ceiling back into shape. He went through room by room and helped me understand what should be painted (walls, ceiling, and baseboard) and where I could hold off and save money (painting doors â mine were in pretty good shape). He developed a detailed quote and that was the exact price at the end of the job. Communication: Jim texted me several times leading up to the day the job started and then during the process to inform me about the status of the painters. I was never guessing when someone would show up or when the job would be complete. Quality: Wow. Shockingly good!!! There were less expensive painters, but it was clear from talking to Jim that he had many years of experience â as did the team he employed. Before the painters arrived, I told Jim that I needed to cut a 6â hole in the wall to secure some pipes the had broken free. No problem. The lead painter, John, created a patch and 30 mins later, the hole was gone. 60 minutes later, you couldnâ t tell that I had cut a hole. John went on to patch every hole, dent and corner bead that had broken free. My walls looked like they had chicken pox. John went over everything was an expert eye. Jim visited the site several times to ensure the team had everything they needed and that I was satisfied. I canâ t say enough about John, the lead painter. He was exceptional. Great attention to detail, fast, neat and very friendly. Clean-up. The team put cloth down on everything. With all the repairs, the cloth caught wall chips, mud and paint. On the last day, the team pulled these out, vacuumed everything and replaced all the furniture. Great attention to detail!!! I would recommend this contractor to all my friends and family!"

"Joe and Chris exceeded all of our expectations with the job. The job consisted of having to remove the left side door frame and molding from our bathroom door which they took great care in doing thus minimizing any destruction of the plaster walls. They expertly installed the new frame and rehung the door perfectly. They also repaired out front exterior door which was out of plumb and not closing properly. And also replaced our exterior basement door. They also replaced a damaged tongue and groove knotty pine board in our stairwell leading to our upstairs bedroom. Joe and Chris explained everything they had to do to complete the jobs and Joes estimate was reasonable in price. They are both gentlemen with a professional attitude, friendly and easy to talk to about the work and a variety of other topics not related to the job at hand. I highly recommend them."

"Our house needed a lot of work as it had not been painted in a long time. Our large side deck was really a mess with chipping paint. We selected Gonti Painting after meeting Clei and were very impressed by his professionalism. He really cares about his work!! His pricing was in line with three other bids that we received. His workers were on time each morning and were really caring about what they were doing. Prior to painting each day protection was put down and at the end of the day areas were cleaned up. "It is with deep satisfaction that I recommend Gradys Painting and Plastering & Construction. Mr. George Grady is a skilled craftsman. He was hired to correct long neglected and extensive masonry and window issues on a large, beautiful Presbyterian Church built in the Civil War era in Philadelphia. The property was neglected with only minimal maintenance performed over the last 40+ years. The building was in severe decline and in need of stabilization and restoration on many fronts. Cracked ledge plates were chipped out and reestablished, internal walls damaged by leakage were broken out and repaired, brickwork was repointed and in severe cases reestablished to original strength and beauty. Leaks around the base of the building were addressed to stabilize deterioration of the foundation. Large rotted window sills under beautiful stained glass windows were restored after significant masonry reestablishment due to water damage under the rotted out sills. Broken and missing stained glass windows are in the process of repair and replacement. The process started with new metal frames cast by Mr. Grady. The new frames will hold clear painted replications of the original stained glass, also crafted by Mr. Grady. Regular windows all around the church and manse were also repaired and restored. Roof leaks were accurately identified and repaired. A sagging plaster ceiling has been torn out and restored. All this work was done by Mr. Grady alone or with an occasional helper. He worked with care, expertise and respect for the original structure. The results far exceeded our expectations and have injected new life into a building on the brink. This building, owned by the Presbytery of Philadelphia, now houses a new urban ministry in a newly gentrifying area of the city. We are happy to have had the good fortune to be connected to Gradys Painting and Plastering & Construction by Service Magic."

Instead, save yourself the time and hassle and find a local interior painter.
Leave exterior painting to the pros. Not only do you need to worry about the type and quality of the paint, you’ll also likely need a ladder and considerably more prep work. You’ll likely need additional equipment like ladders, scaffolding and possibly a paint sprayer. It’s almost cheaper to just hire a pro. Talk to a local exterior house painter about your project.

- Call pros for site inspections and estimates. Always get three to five estimates.

- Sign a contract with the pro of your choice. You might need to make a down payment, usually 25% to 50% of the total project cost to cover material costs, but not all pros require this. Don’t pay for the entire project upfront.
- A complete inspection. Each pro takes a walk around your home to evaluate the condition of your current paint, the size of the job and any obstacles for accessing the site. They do this to see how much prep work they’ll need and estimate how long the job will take. The more thorough the inspection, the more accurate the quote.
- Color consultation. Expect each contractor to have varying color options and suggestions. However, you have the final say.
- Listen to the pro – they’re experts after all – but don’t get pushed into a color combination or finish type that you don’t want. Understand the different exterior paints or interior paint choices before your pro arrives.
- A rough estimate or complete quote. Finishing contractors vary here. Usually, they can quote straightforward projects on the spot. But some may need to take it back to their shop to run numbers and give you a detailed estimate with costs broken out. Neither method is better than the other, but just make sure to get multiple quotes.
- How long have you been in business? A long business history helps you avoid shoddy companies. It’s hard for a service business to stay in business if they don’t do good work.
- Are you licensed and insured? Not all states require a license for painting homes, but many do. Always use one that’s insured.
- Do you belong to any professional organizations? You’ll find many online, like the Painting Contractors Association or the Finishing Contractors Association?
- Do you have other work I can look at? Always check a portfolio or, in the case of painters, it’s better to look at work they did a few years ago to see how well it’s held up.
- How long will the job take? Get a rough estimate but get it in writing.
- How many people are in your crew? This is especially important if you work remotely. More people generally means more noise, but they’ll be done faster.
- Will I be in the way if I’m home during the painting? You usually won’t be in the way, but this question helps you understand what to expect while they’re working. They’ll need to lay down coverings and do a lot of prep work.
- Do you guarantee your work? Never hire a painter who doesn’t guarantee their work. This often means they’ll rush the prep work, since peeling never happens right away.
- What type of paint do you use, and how long is it rated to last? Different rooms need different paint and the exterior needs exterior paint. It comes in different grades with different guaranteed lifetimes.
- Can you supply a written estimate and contract? Never use a painter who isn’t willing to put his work in writing.
