"There was a leak just inside our garage over a doorway that was causing some ceiling damage. We got three quotes from highly rated roofers in our area. All were quick to respond and friendly. One diagnosed a badly cut valley was causing the leak and required a redo costing over $1200, including a few other recaulks of vents, etc. The other two roofers, including Stu, noticed a small hole that was causing the leak. One gave us a quote on patching and lots of other recaulking and sealing, also well over $1000. Stu checked the roof and gave us a very reasonable quote for the patch and did not recommend any other 'extras,' although mentioned issues to watch for that might require future work. We hired him and the person who actually came out to do the patch (Sean?) was on time and did the work quickly. He also rechecked the roof and told us whoever did the roof years earlier did a good job. Not saying that the other contractors were dishonest, just that some were more observant and it was a little early for some of the extra work they recommended. I've used Home Advisor for about 10 projects over the past two months on my parent's home and the lesson I've learned is to always get at least three quotes, even if you are impressed with the pricing and the first couple contractors, perhaps a couple more on a big project such as a kitchen renovation. You will get a wide range of prices, but will also learn of various options to consider. Our projects changed and improved as we became more knowledgable and we had good results that fit our budget."
