While I had suspected that years ago the gutters had been legally connected to the sewer system and later, when the laws changed disconnected, that was not the problem. They found that the kitchen sink drain pipe had completely rusted away where it had previously been connected to the sewer line. In addition, they found and replaced a broken clay sewer pipe.
