"I gave a 5 star review because the end result of the project looks great. If I could give any constructive feedback, it would be 2 things. Day 1 of the job, Tom did not have materials to cover the room. There were paint specs all over the counters, tub, toilet, and garbage can. I used a scour pad and butter knife to clean the shower and toilet top. I am replacing the toilet seat and garbage can. There was paint on the blinds too, but I had already determined to replace those. The cleanup is still not done. I am going to have to purchase a cleaning solution to take care of the paint on the ceiling fan and door. The only other feedback would be for him to provide a little more guidance and hand holding in selecting paint colors. I provided a picture of what I wanted, and the 1st color he chose did not match. So then I went to the paint store myself and picked out 2 colors that I thought would work, but neither did. But, I was a little clueless, having never painted before. So $100 was spent on paint that did not work. It was at that point that he recommended picking out mixed samples before buying...which I went out and did. Thankfully, both samples were what I wanted, but since we were over budget for the paint already, I ended up buying the paint. It was an additional $45 which I agreed to cover. However, I think the sample suggestion should have been presented right away, but he likes to buy from Sherwin Williams and they do not do samples. Maybe they have a higher quality paint, but it is $28 per quart, whereas Menards was $18 per quart. When you hire someone, you are looking for their expertise to help you choose, and that really did not happen. In the end, the walls look great. Tom is very kind, a good worker, and even came back to do a second coat for the ceiling, because the primer was showing through."

Frequently asked questions

  • Budget: Your budget is central in influencing which fence you buy. Figure out your spending limit and determine your budget per linear foot, as fencing costs can quickly add up.
  • Durability: Consider strength, lifespan, resistance to pests, rot and fungus, rust, and the materialā€™s ability to withstand local weather conditions.
  • Maintenance: Maintenance, cleaning and repairs should be simple and minimal.
  • Purpose: The style of fence you choose should be suitable for its intended purpose.
  • Installation: Find out what installation requirements, such as foundations or supports, are necessary. Research if DIY is possible or if professional installation is your only option.

  • Wood fence styles range from traditional to contemporary and from purely functional to attractive and decorative.
  • Lattice fences are affordable and decorative. You can use them as privacy fences by growing dense foliage over them.
  • Vertical board fences are the most common type of residential fence. There are budget-friendly options available as well as higher-end panels. Vertical board fences are affordable choices for basic privacy and security fences.
  • Picket fences conjure up cozy images of traditional properties with carefully tended lawns. Theyā€™re good for demarcating a property boundary but donā€™t provide much security.
  • Post-and-rail fences are a solid choice for making a boundary over a large area, as material use is minimal. However, they donā€™t provide any security or privacy.
  • Metal fences are generally stronger and more secure than other materials. You can choose from highly ornate and secure metalwork or simple but functional wire. For the higher-end options, which are often costly, homeowners often reduce costs per square foot by combining the metal with brick.
  • Aluminum fencing is an attractive, more affordable alternative to wrought iron. Although it has a similar appearance, itā€™s not as strong as wrought iron.
  • Steel fencing is a strong, long-lasting fencing option thatā€™s good for creating a secure barrier around your home.
  • Vinyl fencing made from PVC comes in a range of styles, including those that mimic real wood.
  • Composite fencing is an amalgamation of wood fibers, pulp or sawdust and ground plastic particles that are bonded and held together by an acrylic resin. It looks and feels like real wood and is an environmentally friendly choice, as it usually contains a high percentage of recycled materials.
  • Wire fences are not made to enhance the aesthetics of your property, although some homeowners opt for black fencing to help boost aesthetics. They are inexpensive, purely functional products suitable for DIY or professional installation.
  • Barbed wire fencing isnā€™t common in residential settings. While itā€™s an inexpensive, fierce and intimidating security deterrent, it isnā€™t attractive and will not add value to your home.

Comment: I have a fence that is leaning....the current post is in concrete and would need to be removed. Then a replacement post would need to be placed in the same spot...potentially would have to drill out concrete and add more concrete to secure the post.
