Write a ReviewAfter numerous in-person meetings and phone calls with Joe Long [Mr. Build], I contracted him to replace four door frames at my home. The start of his work was delayed and when I contacted him, he claimed it was due to delays with the city and permitting. I then contacted the city and found this to be incorrect. I called Joe and shared that I was told by the city that this permit was available within 24 hours. Upon him starting the work, I paid nearly 40% up front. I was not on the property when he did the work as I was at our primary home out of town. His wife contacted me and stated the work was done and requested a final payment. She emailed me the invoice and asked for immediate payment. However, the invoice did not include a remittance address. I called her and let he know I needed the address so I could send a check. She provided that and a check processed direct from my bank the next day. Two days later I arrived on property and inspected the work. I was in total shock. It was clear upon visual inspection that the door frames Joe installed were not the correct ones. The overall workmanship was totally unacceptable. Not only were they inappropriate cuts made in the surrounding composite area - thus exposing areas and negating the weatherproof protection, the frames themselves were not correct, the door hinges do not match up to the frames and were installed incorrectly and despite #10 screws not fitting being counter sunk into the hinges- he attempted to install them regardless. Neither the hinges nor the screws are flush in the frames he installed. Not only is this bad workmanship - it is a safety hazard for those walking through the doors and getting hung or cut by exposed and protruding screws. As soon as I witnessed the subpar work-I contacted Joe and asked that he meet me on my property. Additionally, we immediately contacted our bank and requested a stop-payment be issued on the check we had processed. Upon Joe showing up at my home, we walked the property and examined all of the frames. He claimed that his crew was not yet done with their work and that all of the issues would be remedied. I alerted him that we had issued a stop payment and asked that he follow-up with me ASAP to discuss how this would be made right. It was at that time that Joe shared his plans to use BONDO to repair all of the areas. He also stated that he would attempt to countersink the screws but that he could not honor a warranty once that was done. Clearly these steps are unacceptable. I informed him as such via email. Wrong frames, installing hinges upside down, wrong screws and incorrect installation techniques are not fixable and will require full replacement. I alerted Joe not to be on my property further until we had agreement on how to move forward. In subsequent written communications with me he acknowledged that he in fact mistakenly ordered the wrong door frames. Why then would he have still installed the incorrect frames-not on one door-but four doors? If I wanted repaired door frames-I would have simply repaired my old door frames. I contracted with Joe for NEW CORRECT door frames. He sent a subsequent email asking if I would be willing to negotiate a lower price. I again was clear-my expectation remains the same-for NEW CORRECT door frames to be installed in a professional manner as that is what he was hired to do. At this time Joe alerted me that he would be placing a lien on my property. As of today-over 2 months since this inappropriate and completely unprofessional work was done-the door frames need to be replaced. This delay has now resulted in additional delays and expense with other work being done to our home-all of which has had to go on hold until the new and correct door frames are installed. I strongly recommend NOT using Mr. Build(Joe Long)on any future projects you are considering doing unless you want horrible workmanship.
Mr Build was prompt in giving me a quote to replace a door. Their pricing was about 50% higher than the contractor I ultimately hired, so I did not use than.
Hello Lyman, Thank you for allowing Mr. Build to quote your project. We use high-end doors, so the price is very subjective when making that decision to go with an installer. I would hope that you review the 3.5-star rating since it reflects negatively on our overall score. If we did the job and it was not up to your standard that is something to provide a low star rating for.
My job is not complete yet, but so far I am completely satisfied. I would definitely suggest them for windows and doors.
It took little bit longer than I expected and there were minor problems with doors .
Very timely on installing new doors. Quality was excellent and installers very good at their craft. Very Pleased
slower than h***. Five weeks to hang a door.
Hello Bruce, I understand your frustration but Mr Build has no control on when our suppliers deliver products. Your front door is a custom height and that is why we could not purchase a door from a local box store. I understand your door was knocked in because of an emergency and you want it fixed asap. We relayed that information to our supplier several times. To give Mr Build a single star, when we have not even done OUR work is inconsiderate as a customer. It brings down our overall rating and effects our future business. I encourage you to reconsider the rating or remove it completely and rate Mr Build AFTER the install.
Everything was done as promised. Delivered and installed on time ,great follow thru and very competitively priced.
I was satisfied with this project until I received a call from Mr Build informing me we needed to schedule a final inspection. It s been weeks since this project was completed. To make matters worse I was told the window for inspection was 8:00-4:00pm which means you have to stay at home all day waiting on someone to show up. On top of all this I was told the hurricane shutters had to be up for the inspections. What 73 year old wants to get out of bed and on a ladder before 8:00 in the morning. The inconveniences to the customer is discouraging and disappointing to say the least. We were not made aware of these conditions when we decided on this project. We are not now happy campers!
Hello Peggy, Thank you for giving Mr Build a 5 star on quality. As for the inspection, that is mandatory from the county and part of the permit process. Part of the inspection requires the shutters being on the home. It is very discouraging that they cannot provide a better window of service, but unfortunately, this is out of Mr Builds control. We had an internal staff member leave and she did not call your inspection in when the project was complete. We did catch it after going through the paperwork and called in the inspection right away. No matter what product was installed on your home an inspection would have been needed. We do apologize for the inconvenience to you. Please reconsider that 3.5 star as it affects future business and it sounds like you were more frustrated with the county requirements than Mr. Build. Thank you, Joe Long (President)
