How We Got Started

I chose to work in this industry because In 1983, William. L Staton, Master Plumber and Gasfitter, opened his plumbing company in Anne Arundel County. Since then, W.L. Staton has been committed to meeting customers needs and providing services that are at a level above and beyond other providers. The goal of the company is to consistently and professionally meet the plumbing and HVAC needs of homeowners. All Staton work is guaranteed, the technicians are certified, the company is licensed, insured and bonded. William F. Staton, W L.s son, also a Master Plumber and Gasfitter, assumed the day-to-day operating responsibilities of the W.L. Staton Plumbing company in 2012, so his dad could enjoy some time off. Since that time, Will F. has exponentially grown the business. The family and team at W.L. Staton understood the synergies between plumbing, heating and cooling, so an HVAC division was started. It has grown into new geographic areas and continues to uphold the highest level of service.

So I was skeptical when Staton cacti ally came without cancelling appointment after appointment. W Staton seemed to really get it that a plumbing emergency is in fact a plumbing emergency!

Criminal Background Check

Who does HomeAdvisor background check?

The owner or principal of each business in HomeAdvisor's network (with the exception of Corporate Accounts) must pass a background check. Unfortunately, we cannot perform a background check on every employee of a business—the background checks are performed only on the owner or principal. As always, we recommend that you conduct your own research on the businesses you hire, including making inquiries directly with the businesses regarding their employee background check policies.

What does the background check cover?

We use a third-party vendor to conduct a criminal records search in the state in which the business owner or principal works. Our third-party vendor uses a national criminal database ("NCD") to screen service professionals. Businesses will not be admitted to the network if their owners or principals have the following felonies in their available criminal records*:

Arson

Assault/domestic violence/battery

Child abuse

Intimidation/terrorist threats

Kidnapping/abduction

Lewd and lascivious behavior

Manslaughter/murder/homicide/vehicular homicide

Rape/incest

Robbery/carjacking

Sex offenses

Other felonies not listed above that occurred in the past seven years

Contracting without a license in the past seven years

Our background check does not exclude service professionals unless the crime at issue is a felony.

*The comprehensiveness of the NCD varies by state. Please be aware that the reporting in the NCD is particularly limited in the following states: AL, CO, DE, GA, ID, IL, KS, LA, ME, MA, MI, MS, MT, NE, NV, NH, NM, SD, UT, VA, VT, and WY. After initial admission to the HomeAdvisor network, businesses are re-screened biennially.

How is COVID-19 impacting the HomeAdvisor background check program?

Licensing

Verify Trade License HomeAdvisor checks to see if the business carries the appropriate state-level license. Verify Insurance As a part of our screening process, we encourage professionals to carry general liability insurance. We require coverage for hundreds of services. Verification of State Business Filings For business types that require a Secretary of State filing, we confirm that the business is in good standing in the state in which it is located. Criminal Records Search HomeAdvisor uses 3rd party data sources to conduct a criminal search for any relevant criminal activity associated with the owner/principal of the business. Sex Offender Search We confirm that the owner/principal is not listed on the official state Sex Offender web site in the state in which the owner/principal of the company is located. Bankruptcy Search We use 3rd party data sources to check the history of the principal/owner of the business for bankruptcy filings by or against them. Legal Search for Civil Judgments We use 3rd party data sources to check the principal/owner of the business for state level civil legal judgments entered against them. Liens Search We use 3rd party data sources to check the principal/owner of the business for liens placed against them. Identity Verification (SSN) HomeAdvisor verifies the social security number(s) of the owner/principal for identity check purposes. This check applies primarily to smaller business entities. Identity Verification (Reverse Phone Lookup) We conduct a reverse business phone lookup to identify records matching the phone number information provided by the business.
