PEOPLE. PLEASE STOP AND READ BEFORE YOU HIRE THIS CONTRACTOR! Let me just start by saying that I have hired multiple contractors through Homeadvisor.com for many projects at my house and have been very happy with all of them. However, this is my first time dealing with the situation when Troy, the owner of Southern Stainworks and Remodeling, took my deposit, claimed he performed some worked but in reality return the product after 2 months in worse condition and have never returned the deposit. I had two wood doors from a china cabinet that were damaged by chemicals. I have provided a detailed description of the problem related to chemical use on Homeadvisor.com site. When Troy looked at the damaged doors, he said "Good News! I can fix it for you!" When a professional tells me he is confident in delivering the final fixed product, I have a tendency to believe this person. We agreed on the price of $450 but he said he needs a 50% deposit. This should have been my first ALARM. If a person, who owns a Furniture Restoration business, does not have enough cash flow from his business to afford $225 for materials upfront, then he should NOT be in this business. This was not like a special order, like a designed glass, when you have to prepay. As a very naïve person, I got so excited that he can fix the wood doors from my favorite china cabinet, I gave him a deposit. He signed a receipt for the deposit which nowhere says that it’s a non-refundable deposit. Now, to make story short, a week after he picked up the doors which he detached from the china cabinet, he called me to say that he is unable to fix them. He came up with a long story why he can’t fix them, which, as a customer, I have no interest to hear. I just want to see the final result. When I told him that I AM A REASONABLE PERSON AND COMPLETELY UNDERSTAND THAT HE IS JUST UNABLE TO FIX THEM AND ALL I NEED ARE MY DOORS AND A DEPOSIT BACK, TROY SIMPLY DISAPPEAD. After TWO MONTHS chasing after him, we were able to set up a day and time for him to bring the doors back. We were home waiting for him. No one rang a door bell so we assumed he did not show up. When we walked outside, we saw the doors lying on the floor at our front porch. Basically, he just dropped them off at our front porch and ran away. He was supposed to attach them back just the way he dis-attached them at the time he picked them up. The doors looks WORSE than at the time he picked them up (I have all the before and after pictures). HE RUINED BY FURNITURE AND TOOK MY MONEY. PEOPLE, PLEASE DON’T MAKE SAME MISTAKE I DID - DO NOT HIRE THIS CONTRACTOR. I am sure he will reply to this message by saying hard he worked or how much he spent on trying to fix my piece, but the end result is SAME DAMAGED PIECE and NO DEPOSIT BACK!!!!!
