I HIRED CLARENCE BARRETT FOR SHEETROCK REPAIR JOB TO WALL GOING DOWN STEPS TO BASEMENT. THE JOB WAS TERRIBLE AND CANT EXPRESS HOW UPSET MY FAMILY IS RIGHT NOW! HE WAS A TERRIBLE CHOICE The sheetrock replacement repair was absolutely terrible. I'm Not happy with the outcome of the work. The contractor caused damages to my home (existing walls, steps, and floors). The work was very unsatisfactory. I'm Not a Happy Customer period. I'm extremely upset! Unfortunately, my expectations were not met. Due to the poor quality of work provided, the work must be redone causing me to spend more money to fix the issues caused today by Clarence B. I will never hire this man again. I never should have paid him for the services he attempted to repair in my home today. This contractor did have the proper tools to start this small project. My floors were not protected from the products he used causing additional clean up. (I just had the floors installed less than 5 days ago) Mr. Barrett failed to clean up behind himself. I will think twice before I use Home Advisor ever again. The man was terrible and now I'm left with a mess! I should research this guy before allowing him in my home. He didn't even have a receipt book or proper estimate paperwork for me to sign, just very unprofessional. I never should have assumed since he was recommended by Home Advisor, he was a true professional because he was not! VERY UNHAPPY CUSTOMER.

Hello, my name is Clarence Barrett, I have been doing this line of work for over 40 years. I have worked for Yeshiva University for over 34 years,1985 to 2016. I was a facilities manager in charge of seven (7) buildings in midtown new york city for over 15 years. I was a special in charge of maintenance to university president office and his private residence. I take pride in my self on being very neat and clean on the jobs. I do think the young lady was having a bad day with her boyfriend. The work was completed in a professional and work-like manner. The old sheetrock was removed and replaced with 1 1/2 new sheetrock, and compound and plaster the edge or the steps. In addition, the work was done included cutting molding and installing it in the bathroom, this was not part of the agreement. she calls and said that they could not pay the price so we gave them a cheaper price. $119 for 2 days.

We perform this screening when a business applies to join our network and, if the business is accepted, whenever concerns are brought to our attention. If you have concerns that a pro in our network doesn't meet these standards, please contact us to investigate. We're committed to maintaining a network of trusted home service businesses, and those who don't meet our criteria will be rejected or promptly removed from our network.

Criminal Background Check

Who does HomeAdvisor background check?

The owner or principal of each business in HomeAdvisor's network (with the exception of Corporate Accounts) must pass a background check. Unfortunately, we cannot perform a background check on every employee of a business—the background checks are performed only on the owner or principal. As always, we recommend that you conduct your own research on the businesses you hire, including making inquiries directly with the businesses regarding their employee background check policies.

What does the background check cover?

We use a third-party vendor to conduct a criminal records search in the state in which the business owner or principal works. Our third-party vendor uses a national criminal database ("NCD") to screen service professionals. Businesses will not be admitted to the network if their owners or principals have the following felonies in their available criminal records*:

Arson

Assault/domestic violence/battery

Child abuse

Intimidation/terrorist threats

Kidnapping/abduction

Lewd and lascivious behavior

Manslaughter/murder/homicide/vehicular homicide

Rape/incest

Robbery/carjacking

Sex offenses

Other felonies not listed above that occurred in the past seven years

Contracting without a license in the past seven years

Our background check does not exclude service professionals unless the crime at issue is a felony.

*The comprehensiveness of the NCD varies by state. Please be aware that the reporting in the NCD is particularly limited in the following states: AL, CO, DE, GA, ID, IL, KS, LA, ME, MA, MI, MS, MT, NE, NV, NH, NM, SD, UT, VA, VT, and WY. After initial admission to the HomeAdvisor network, businesses are re-screened biennially.

How is COVID-19 impacting the HomeAdvisor background check program?

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, several government agencies and courts across the country have temporarily closed their offices. While HomeAdvisor will continue its background check program to the extent possible, these closures could prevent some background checks from being performed. Please be advised that, during this period, if we could not perform a background check, HomeAdvisor will allow the business into the network and match the business to consumers. As affected government agencies and courts begin to re-open, we will resume our program in those jurisdictions. As always, we encourage consumers to perform their own research, to the extent possible, before hiring any business.

Licensing

We verify any applicable state-level licenses, and we require every business to attest that they carry the appropriate local licensing to practice their trade. Please note that HomeAdvisor does not confirm local licensing. Do your own research using online ratings, reviews and through phone interviews before hiring a company.

Corporate Accounts

Some businesses are employees, franchisees, dealers or independent contractors ("Corporate SP's") of larger national or "Corporate Accounts". When this is the case, we may match you with the Corporate Account or with one of their Corporate businesses. The above screening process does not apply to Corporate Accounts, as HomeAdvisor does not screen Corporate Accounts or Corporate businesses.

Verify Trade License HomeAdvisor checks to see if the business carries the appropriate state-level license. Verify Insurance As a part of our screening process, we encourage professionals to carry general liability insurance. We require coverage for hundreds of services. Verification of State Business Filings For business types that require a Secretary of State filing, we confirm that the business is in good standing in the state in which it is located. Criminal Records Search HomeAdvisor uses 3rd party data sources to conduct a criminal search for any relevant criminal activity associated with the owner/principal of the business. Sex Offender Search We confirm that the owner/principal is not listed on the official state Sex Offender web site in the state in which the owner/principal of the company is located. Bankruptcy Search We use 3rd party data sources to check the history of the principal/owner of the business for bankruptcy filings by or against them. Legal Search for Civil Judgments We use 3rd party data sources to check the principal/owner of the business for state level civil legal judgments entered against them. Liens Search We use 3rd party data sources to check the principal/owner of the business for liens placed against them. Identity Verification (SSN) HomeAdvisor verifies the social security number(s) of the owner/principal for identity check purposes. This check applies primarily to smaller business entities. Identity Verification (Reverse Phone Lookup) We conduct a reverse business phone lookup to identify records matching the phone number information provided by the business.
