Project Type: Full kitchen remodel with small addition. -Estimated Time: 7-8 weeks -Actual Time: 34 weeks (August 2017 - April 2018) -In December the appliances, floors, cabinets, and counter tops were installed. It still took 16+ weeks to complete the project. -On January 1, 2018 the kitchen pipes froze in the active worksite. On January 9, 2018 the pipes burst in the active worksite. -The owner requested the wrong amount for the final draw. Over by $974. Narrative: The kitchen project tested our patience at every turn. EHD had difficulty securing a permit from the town of Herndon, it took almost a month after the project began. The first crew assigned to our project had personal problems which caused delays in the work. The external wall was removed before the windows were on site and they were subsequently delayed; our home was left open with just Tyvek covering 2 windows for a week before we requested plywood be installed. The designer assigned did not schedule time to make selections for finishes, and when he brought samples it was clear it was for his personal aesthetic and not ours. He did not listen to design choices which caused rework and delays in ordering from vendors. The later crews that were in our home solicited side work, talked poorly of the company, and left early when the project was already terribly behind schedule. Work crews were most often crews of one subcontractor with minimal or no supervision, leading to rework and reordering of cabinet trim pieces. The crown molding was installed incorrectly twice. The draw schedule totaled more than the project amount, it took 4 months of requesting a copy of the signed contract to receive it. The final payment was requested for almost $1,000 more than owed. The owner appeared distracted by additional business ventures, showing us video of the new business when our project was so terribly behind schedule. The owner added concessions when the (second) deadline was missed and the project was not done by Thanksgiving 2017. There were no additional concessions as the project labored on for 5 more months. He offered poor excuses that exemplified that there was no one managing our project. He often referenced "teachable moments", "lessons learned", and "just humans" in his excuses. He also sent many references to the number of jobs he completes in a year and his competency based on them. I did not see evidence that this company could manage the work or the people that work for them adequately. I had the impression early on that we were not a priority and that the teams were distracted by other jobs/issues/etc. The rework and the time delays were frustrating, but the excuses about humans, unavoidable personnel issues, other projects that go right, etc. compounded the poor experience. I could not recommend this company to anyone.

Response from Company:

This is an unfortunate review of the project, but EHD will take the criticism and move forward to improve all of our crews and processes. We have maintained our relationship with the client above and have even provided additional services to this property. It's unfortunate to have an unhappy client as we aim never to have such.

Our 30-yr old house needed updating & expansion. From the beginning of engagement, the EHD Design Build staff demonstrated their depth of understanding the possibilities as they helped us visualize & shape the improvements. Together, we created a fabulous plan that was executed with expert craftsmanship, utilizing quality materials. Throughout the project, their genuine care & concern for our budget & our timeline was evident. EHD's signature of excellence on every level made them a pleasure to work with. We will definitely be calling them back for our next project!

I’m so glad I used EHD! My house needed a total makeover after 25years. My plan was to open the kitchen/living rm./dining rm. into 1 space, completely redo 2.5 baths, plus paint and hardwood floors whole house. I had no experience with this and no idea what to expect. Here are the highlights of my journey with EHD. After interviewing 2 contractors I chose EHD because EHD: 1) starts with a designer who becomes an integral part of the process; 2) included whole house renovation in the estimate whereas the other contractor wanted me to handle the paint and hardwood floors myself; and 3) provided a detailed estimate with line items so I could see what was included in the budget. Once I signed with EHD the planning and process into construction was seamless. I had an original plan for the main floor – the designer made minor changes that increased storage, and greatly improved the beauty, flow and efficiency of the space. She looked at pictures I liked and brought me samples to match. She was VERY detail oriented and listened to what I said. I never felt overwhelmed and really appreciated having the designer’s help. I told EHD generally what I wanted from the start – they knew what I needed and customized their estimate/budget with that in mind. They included recessed lights and upgrades they knew I needed in the estimate. I was concerned about being nickel and dimed later in the process, but that never happened. Once demolition started it was every weekday from 8-4. Best if you can NOT be home, but I have large dogs that I couldn’t leave with the workers, so I was home the entire time. EHD was GREAT about the dogs. From the start we planned to shift and isolate myself and the dogs into 1-2 rooms at a time so the work could be done and this worked well. On to the work itself – it is fabulous! Top-qualify craftsmanship and I’m so pleased with the results. Throughout the construction there were approximately 15 workers through the house. I knew everyone by name, and all were respectful of me, my property and my dogs. And … the workers cleaned up the construction space every day!! This was important to me with the dogs walking around at night. Renovating whole house is a difficult and stressful process. Not everything went smoothly, but the couple of times I needed to reach John (the owner) I received an immediate response and my situation was resolved quickly. Start to finish the process took longer than anticipated – partially due to the need to fix walls (5 rooms with original wallpaper needed a lot of work!). Still there was room for improvement on the timeline, but this is probably true with any contractor. To sum up – John walked through my house that first day and said he could make it beautiful. He delivered on that promise! Originally I thought it was a lot of money to spend, but now I feel like it’s the best money I’ve ever spent. I love my new house!

Mr. Thompson and his staff at EHD were professional from start to finish. I had major work done in my home (master bathroom, kitchen and hardwood floors throughout my home). I could not be happier with the quality of work provided, no detail was left to chance. My concern and questions were always address. I was personally taken to select items for my home either by Mr. Thompson or his designer. My home was left in pristine condition everyday after they finish working. An most of all they kept to the budget and time line. I highly recommend EHD for all of your building needs. You cannot ask for a better company.

Hiring EHD was an excellent decision! Mr. Thompson was extremely professional and accommodating. His crew was extremely professional, incredibly efficient, and super nice. EHD came in thousands of dollars less than one of those TV flooring companies. I will definitely hire them again.

EHD removed the carpet from 3 bedrooms/living room and dining room and replaced with wood laminate flooring. I consulted with Mr. Thompson about types of flooring and pricing because I had a quote from a TV flooring company. EHD came in thousands less. Mr. Thompson's crew was punctual, incredibly efficient, professional, and super nice! They cleaned up as if they had never been here, an added bonus!!! I will definitely hire them again.

EHD moved our furnace and hot water heater from the center of our living room to our basement, leveled a sagging floor, rerouted all the AC ducts on two floors, put in a fireplace, and rewired the electricity. They came in almost $7000 less than the next best quote we had (we had 5 different quotes) and they finished on time . But what really made them shine was that my wife would call them almost every day with tiny little alterations to our original plan, like where a light switch should go, changing paint color ... there were literally dozens of high maintenance little changes she wanted done and EHD (John) fixed every one of the requests immediately. I work in a customer service industry and EHD put my business to shame with the way they put up with our micro requests. They were all about making sure we were happy. If you are getting a bunch of quotes for remodeling make sure you get one from these guys. Fantastic.

We signed a contract with EHD in August 2015 for a major 6 figure renovation of our small split level home. We selected EHD based on our desire to support a local business with its own employees. The other competitive bid relied heavily on sub-contractors. Our experience was unsatisfactory for several reasons. Our contract stated completion would be 7-8 weeks but went over 20 weeks, starting 9/28/15 with substantial completion in February and warranty work completed in April 2016. We were discouraged to find the "employees" were independent contractors working for EHD. We experienced a lack of communication as there was no project manager assigned to the renovation. A coordinator was in December. Communication was poor. The hardwood, electrical, and fireplace contractors provided quality work. The painting sub-contractor was substandard as he did not properly cover or protect work areas. We are not pleased with the kitchen and bathroom plumbing. We hired a licensed plumber who fixed the problems as we were tired of waiting for EHD who advised us we would void their warranty if we hired a third party. We would not recommend EHD for a major project.

Response from Company:

This 20 weeks of project work is what happens when you have a project where the client orders all of their materials and furniture and the builder agrees to assist in putting it together. Outside of this the project was complete in 6 weeks per contracted scope of work. We will never make everyone happy but in 15 years EHD has 5 unhappy clients where they felt the need to voice concerns online. We stand by our quality, our process and our people!!
