Reviews
Write a ReviewScheduled a whole day of services one month in advance. I sent pictures of what needed to be done one month in advance. Well, the day came, only to find out they can't perform the work because it's too high. The height, communicated via telephone as well as the detailed pictures sent, couldn't have been more clearly relayed. The best part is that I used my vacation time to ensure I was available for questions. Would highly, highly, highly not recommend.....unless you have vacation time to burn.
We undertook a large renovation project which involved replacing old ceilings and electrical work, having hardwood flooring installed, etc. Everyone did a great job. The final piece, a carpenter to do all the finish work. Almost immediately it became apparent that he didn't have the skills. Although we didn't have anyone lined up, we decided to cut ties, walking away from a large deposite. While at out local Ace store, the owner referred us to Ace Handyman. We decided to give it a try. Gregg Paquette arrived to give us a consultation on how we could get back on track and wow his years of experience was immediately apparent. For the first time in weeks, we have a renewed sense of confidence that is all turning out better than we hoped. We took the hatdway to find him, but we did!!!!
Quick, cheap, and professional. These guys are awesome.
They charge 120 an hour for painting (one person) and estimate the job (one small room) to take 4-6 hours. There are not many people available to do work in Portland and a really skilled painter truly could have done the work in 4 hours. Ace did not take the time to come to the site to do the estimate but another company did. The other company gave a fixed quote of $1000 including materials and travel, so comparable. Long story short, Ace finished only half the room in 8 hours and billed me $1047 for that. The quality/efficiency would be fine, if the hourly rate was not so high for painting and the rate would be fine if they were more professional and better at estimating. They said it was because of the trim, but Zack did not get started on trim until after 3 and he left around 4:30. So I am left to do all the trim and wainscot myself which is the much more annoying and time consuming part of the job. And I only hired someone because I do not have any time. According to them, it took 4.5 hours for him to finish the flat wall (500 sq ft). Then from 1-3, it is unknown what he did. I know he got lunch and went out to the hardware store to buy a brush, which is fine, but maybe not while billing twice what a master painter would normally bill. Anyway, a lot of people who have seen the room have asked why I paid them before they finished and it is because they seemed so professional and reasonable in their communication. I trusted that they would stand by their work for the prices they were charging and they did not. I did ask if they would come back and finish the job, considering that I had already paid over 1k and they said no.
Like many negative reviews, this one unfortunately does not accurately represent the situation, nor our approach to work or customer service. Upon receiving one photo from this customer, stating they needed a room painted, we quoted 4-6 hours of work. We explained that we bill based on time and materials, versus a fixed bid, which the customer agreed to. Upon arrival, our craftsperson observed that the amount of trim was much larger than explained by the customer, and the condition of the wood was such that it would require significant preparation. We clearly communicated this to the customer, explaining that the scope to appropriately compete the work was much larger- likely 2 days- so that they could decide whether or not to proceed at that time. The customer agreed to move forward with one day of work, with the clear expectation that the final trim painting would not be completed in that time. She asked us, per an email she sent, to "focus on cutting in, so I can finish later with a roller." We followed her directions to the letter, including checking in throughout the day at various stopping points to ensure she wanted to continue with the work. She did not express any concerns while we were there, nor at the end of the day when we reviewed the work and invoice with her. It was only a few days later that she sent us an email asking that we return and do so for free. As we had clearly communicated the scope of work and she had agreed to the work that was completed, we could not do a return job for free, however we offered to return for the follow up work and offered discount should she want us to return. We stand behind our craftspeople, our communication, and our work. We are grateful for this customer's past business and wish her all the best.
So far I have only been in touch with the office manager of Ace Handyman Services - Southern Maine, but that went extremely well and she was able to schedule a handyman for a few hours at my house, early next week. I feel confident, based on the good impression that the manager made, that her handymen are thoughtful, skilled and efficient workers.
Connie, thanks so much for taking the time to write this review! We so enjoy working with you, and are looking forward to doing so again in the future.
We needed a gutter removed and that happened without a hitch. Zachary was the best! Fully recommend without hesitation.

Matt and Zach from Ace Handyman Service were just terrific. They were polite, professional and worked to provide my desired outcome. Loved their can do disposition and willingness to include my feedback in the execution of their work.
Thank you for having us help with your project and your patience in allowing us to complete it safely and in a way that allowed us to minimize risk to the large mirror and your home. We are glad we were able to accomplish this for you!
